LIB 11-02-22MINUTES LIBRARY COMMISSION Wednesday, November 2, 2022 LIBRARY COMMISSION MEETING CALL TO ORDER At 7:00 p.m., Chair Pan called the meeting to order via remote teleconference. ROLL CALL Commissioners present: Qin Pan, Liyan Zhao, Rahul Vasanth, Sheela Sreekanth Commissioners absent: Archana Panda City/County Staff present: Kevin Khuu, Jessica Javier, Clare Varesio, Jennifer Weeks Guest Speakers: Keiko O’Leary CEREMONIAL MATTERS AND PRESENTATIONS None APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Subject: September 7, 2022 Library Commission Meeting Minutes Recommended Action: Review and approve the September 7, 2022 Library Commission meeting minutes. Commissioner Sreekanth motioned to approve the minutes as submitted. Commissioner Vasanth seconded. Motion passed with 4 yes and 1 absent. POSTPONEMENTS None ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS None OLD BUSINESS 2. Subject: Cupertino Poet Laureate Subcommittee Update Recommended Action: Receive an update from the Cupertino Poet Laureate Subcommittee. Vice Chair Zhao announced the Poet Laureate Celebration Event on November 16 at 6 p.m. at Community Hall. The subcommittee has sent out the invitations. Working on finalizing the guest list and catering. Clarified it is a public event and everyone is welcome to attend. Clare Varesio, Community Librarian, encouraged everyone to attend who is available to celebrate the incoming and outgoing poets and the program. Chair Pan introduced Keiko O’Leary, incoming Cupertino Poet Laureate. Ms. O’Leary provided a brief introduction to the commission. NEW BUSINESS None STAFF AND COMMISSION REPORTS 3. Subject: Monthly Update Reports Recommended Action: Receive Monthly Update Reports from: - Cupertino Community Librarian Reported as submitted. o Commissioner Sreekanth, Vice Chair Zhao, Commissioner Vasanth, and Chair Pan expressed many thanks to Clare for her contributions over the years to the Cupertino Library. o Liana Crabtree, Cupertino resident, expressed many thanks to Clare. - County Librarian Monthly Update Reported as submitted. - Friends of the Library o Did not end up holding the October book sale. The next book sale is scheduled for February 2023. Donation bins are closed right now. o The book sale in the Cupertino Library Lobby is available anytime the Library is open. - Cupertino Library Foundation No updates. - Commissioners o Vice Chair Zhao reported on the History of Chinese American Women event at the Library. - Poet Laureate No updates. - Staff o Council approved extending the resolution authorizing continued remote teleconference meetings through December 1, 2022. o For Commissioners whose terms are expiring in January, an email was sent by the City Clerk last week confirming whether you are eligible for reappointment.  Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2023. Council will conduct interviews and make appointments in late January. o Commissioners Dinner will be held in person on Monday, November 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Quinlan Community Center in the Cupertino Room. o Annual Tree Lighting – Friday, December 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Quinlan Community Center. Open to all, no advanced registration required. o For the following holiday events, registration is required at reg4rec.org.  Breakfast with Santa – Saturday, December 3 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Quinlan Community Center  Signing Santa – Saturday, December 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Quinlan Community Center  Santa Visits – December 10, 11, 16, 17, and 18 (15-Minute Visits to your home) o Rachelle Sander has been promoted to the Director of Parks of Recreation effective October 8.
