SUSTAINABILITY CHAMPION OF THE YEAR
This award recognizes a person or group committed to maintaining a sustainable and healthy place to live, work, and play in Cupertino. The City’s Climate Action Plan
defines strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable actions. For more information, visit www.cupertino.org/sustainability. To nominate a
Sustainability Champion, please answer the following questions:
* What did the nominee do?

Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club. Dr. Latshaw is a dedicated mentor of youth and supports young people to become active in local climate action.
* How is the action innovative, exceptional, exemplary, or inspirational?
Dr. Latshaw served as Chair of the Sustainability Commission at the start of the COVID-19 Shelter-in-Place Order, leading the Commission through the transition to virtual
meetings and the first year of the pandemic. He has co-led subcommittees to support the development of Cupertino's landmark all-electric reach code and the kick-off of the
City's Climate Action Plan update process.
* What was the current and/or future impact on the community/environment (include quantitative impacts if possible)?
As a founding member of the Cupertino Sustainability Commission, Dr. Latshaw dedicated his time, expertise, and passion for the environment to public service for over five
years and helped to shape the direction of the Commission. As a member of the Commission, his supported a recommendation to City Council for a local all-electric reach
code for new construction, which was adopted by City Council. This reach code will reduce future greenhouse gas emissions from energy use in new buildings.

In partnership with the California Native Garden Foundation, Shilpa used the NextDoor platform to build hyperlocal connections in Cupertino that promote the exchange of
knowledge, goods, and services with the values of inclusivity, sustainability, and community. The goal of the project was to build community and connection to help foster
regionally-seated economies rooted in sustainable practices.
* How is the action innovative, exceptional, exemplary, or inspirational?
There is a great power in communities that have a common goal of working together to protect the environment and community in which they live. However, communities
are more disconnected than ever before, and platforms such as NextDoor, although helpful at times, are fueling division. This project utilizes social media like never before
to bring people within one community together to foster an attachment to their neighbors, create civic awareness and promote action that protects the environment.
* What was the current and/or future impact on the community/environment (include quantitative impacts if possible)?
Community members have used the group to convene people around common causes, promote initiatives, ask questions and share updates on local policies, research, and
volunteer opportunities. After the project, community members’ scores on how sustainable they perceived their lifestyle as being, how inclusive they perceived their
community as being and how cohesive they saw their community as being increased by 1.4 points, 0.6 points and 0.8 points respectively (ratings were on a 10 point scale).
