Subject: Follow up response on Deer Hollow Farm grant application

Chair Kumarappan and Commissioners:
I wanted to respond to the question raised by Commissioner Xu during deliberation.
Our White Barn project has also been impacted by the COVID closures. It was always our
plan that we would go through a research, design, and permitting phase during the 2019-2020
fiscal year, but we had hoped to begin construction before July 2020, the end of the grant
period. Both our ability to receive project approvals and start construction have been on hold
since March.
We estimate that the project will be under construction for 1 year once we break ground and
begin demolition. It is impossible to tell exactly when approvals will be granted and when
construction can proceed, but we believe that the majority of work will be completed in the
2020-2021 fiscal year.
Thank you,
David Fung

Friends of Deer Hollow Farm is looking forward to tomorrow's Parks &Recreation
Commission meeting and an opportunity to address any questions you may have regarding
our application in the Community Funding Grant Program evaluation for 2020.
Our application in this cycle will go toward funding our largest-ever capital improvement
project, a renovation of our signature White Barn. We hope you've visited Deer Hollow
Farm in the past, and that you recognize the Barn!

It looks great in this picture, but it is in declining physical condition, with no major
maintenance recorded in the past 70 years. This full renovation, which we are able to
undertake because of a large estate gift, will guarantee that the Barn will be enjoyed by
children and the community for the next 50 years.
The grant from the City of Cupertino in the current year, has helped fund pre-construction
design and engineering work, including historical assessment and a planset at 90%
completion level which are being reviewed for permits right now.
Although COVID-19 has impacted our attendance which is over 100,000 walk-in visitors
and 5,000 elementary school Farm Tours annually, this turns out to be a great time to start
construction - since our facilities are currently closed per county direction, there is less
impact on our visitors from construction.
I'll be available for any questions you might have in your hearing, and please feel free to
