Members of the public wishing comment on an item on the agenda may do so in the following ways: 1) E-mail comments by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4th to the Commission at librarycommission@cupertino.org. These e-mail comments will be received by the commission members before the meeting and posted to the City's website after the meeting. 2) E-mail comments during the times for public comment during the meeting to the Commission at librarycommission@cupertino.org. Cupertino Librarian Clare Varesio and Recreation Coordinator Daniel Mestizo provided an overview of teen programming provided by the Parks and Recreation Department and the Library. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 2. Subject: Meeting of September 2, 2020. Recommended Action: Review and approve the minutes for the September 2, 2020 Library Commission meeting. Commissioner Wang motioned to approve the minutes. Commissioner Vasanth seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously with five votes yes. Subject: Addressing the Digital Divide Recommended Action: Receive a presentation from the Cupertino Librarian and Santa Clara County Librarian and discuss ways to address the digital divide. Clare Varesio and Jennifer Weeks shared a presentation on efforts to address the digital divide. Vice Chair Pan inquired about providing a way to help people charge their electronic devices. Commissioner Crabtree agreed with Vice Chair Pan's comments and asked if there is an opportunity to add outdoor outlets when the City installs the electrical unit for the bike racks. Chair Wo commented that she had researched issues on the digital divide and found that students age five and six have difficulty with early access to electronics, which is necessary to prepare them for future use of electronics in education. Receive Monthly Update Reports From: Cupertino Community Librarian Clare Varesio provided the Cupertino Librarian report County Library District Report Jennifer Weeks provided the County Library District report Friends of the Library Report Cupertino Library Foundation Report Commissioner Reports -Commissioner Vasanth attended the October Mayor's meeting and provided updates. -Chair Wo attended the September Mayor's meeting and provided updates. -Commissioner Crabtree provided an update on the Housing Authority and the 2021 Community Service Plan from VTA. VTA is voting on their final plan in December. Poet Laureate Report Jing Jing Yang provided the Poet Laureate report. Currently, all I seven community libraries are offering lobby self-service where -=' patrons can enter into the lobby of the library to pick up their holds, browse a limited collection of new books, movies and bestsellers, and -� use the new self-check machines for contactless service. Another service that has been appreciated by our patrons is offering grade based and genre focused book bundles. Parents and caregivers can easily pick up additional books for their young readers. Lobby visits are limited to 10 minutes and do not require an appointment. Visitors are required to follow social distancing guidelines including maintaining 6 ft distance from others, wearing a face covering, and using hand sanitizer made available by the Library District. Lobby hours vary by location and differ from curbside hours. For a complete list, visit sccld.org/curbside. ROV recognizes that libraries are community hubs and trusted sources of information. No trips to the library needed and you can renew online if the item is eligible for renewal. Words of Appreciation In a year that has been wrought with many challenges, in addition to the pandemic, its important to take a moment to listen to words of appreciation from library patrons.
