TEEN 03-10-2021 APPROVED MINUTES CUPERTINO TEEN COMMISSION Wednesday, March 10, 2021 REGULAR TEEN COMMISSION MEETING CALL TO ORDER At 6:0 1 p.m. Chair Jayant called the Teen Commission meeting to order. This was a teleconference meeting with no physical location. ROLL CALL Present: All. Tardy: None. Absent: None. Staff: Daniel Mestizo. All commissioners teleconferenced for the meeting. CEREMONIAL MATTERS & PRESENTATIONS APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Subject: Approval of Minutes for February 20, 2021 Recommended Action: Review and approve minutes from February 10 Teen Commission meeting. Commissioner Natarajan motions to approve minutes. Vice Chair Yeung seconds motion. The motion carries unanimously. WRITTEN/ORAL COMMUNICATIONS OLD BUSINESS 2. Subject: Collaboration with the Safe Routes to School Program Recommended Action: Review the next step suggestions and decide on next steps for supporting the video contest and hosting a talk during advisory periods. Safe Routes to School Coordinator Cherie Walkowiak shared the upcoming Safe Routes Video Contest with the Teen Commission. The Youth and Teen Advocacy Subcommittee will be assisting with the Video Contest Q&A on April 28th and serve as judges for the contest. Staff provided an update on advisory periods and postponing the Safe Routes Advisory project until the 2021-2022 school year. The Teen Commission will assist with developing curriculum topics for future advisory period presentations. Cupertino Teen Commission Minutes March 10, 2021 3. Subject: Youth-Led Organization Monthly Feature Recommended Action: Evaluate current nominations and select one organization to be featured in the April youth-led organization social media campaign. Staff reviewed the Youth-Led Organization Monthly Feature selection process with the Teen Commission. The following organizations gave presentations to the Teen Commission to be considered for the April Youth-Led Organization Monthly Feature: Apart But Not Alone, Bookstorm, We Love STEM, Bookstorm. The Teen Commission completed the evaluation process and selected Bookstorm as the Apr il monthly feature. NEW BUSINESS 4. Subject: 2021 Youth@TorreAve TEDx Event Recommended Action: Designate two representatives from the Teen Commission to collaborate with the Cupertino Library Teen Advisory Board on the 2021 TEDx Event. Staff gave an overview of the Youth@TorreAve TEDx Event and provided updates on the 2021 event to the commission. The Teen Commission designated Chair Jayant and Commissioner Zhang to be the commission representatives for the 2021 event. STAFF & COMMISSION REPORTS 5. Subject: Update Reports Recommended Action: Receive update reports from staff and Teen Commissioners. Staff Updates • Staff provided the following departmental updates: winners of the Drafting Cupertino’s Future Essay Contest, Big Bunny 5k Virtual Run, and the #CupertinoCares Take the Pledge initiative. Commissioner Updates • Commissioner Naqvi debriefed the March Mayor’s Meeting with the Teen Commission. • Chair Jayant provided an updated on the Fremont Union High School District tentative reopening plans. FUTURE AGENDA SETTING Chair Jayant and Commissioner Gu requested the School Reopening Discussion to be placed on a future agenda.
