Teen 03-27-2019 (Special) Cupertino Teen Commission SPECIAL MEETING Wednesday, March 27, 2019 6:00 pm Quinlan Community Center 10185 N. Stelling Rd. Cupertino, CA 95014 APPROVED MINUTES CALL TO ORDER @ 6:08pm PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Krishnan, Tung, Khot, Tan, Shearin, Subramanyam Tardy: Chan, Krithika V. Absent: Vemula Staff Present: Daniel Mestizo CEREMONIAL MATTERS & PRESENTATIONS MINUTES FROM PREVIOUS MEETING 1. March 13, 2019 - Commissioner Tung motions to approve minutes. Commissioner Subramanyam seconds motion. Motion passes unanimously. WRITTEN/ORAL COMMUNICATIONS OLD BUSINESS 2. <hack> Cupertino 2019 Planning continued for <hack> Cupertino 2019 and action items were given to Commissioners. 3. If I Were Mayor Contest Staff Liaison Mestizo reported the proposal was passed along for approval. 4. City of Cupertino & FUHSD Communication Bridge Staff Liaison Mestizo reported that event ideas were given to an Intra-District Council (IDC) representative with respect to potential Teen Commission involvement. These ideas will be discussed in more detail at an IDC meeting being held on Monday, April 1st and staff would provide a report on the IDC meeting. NEW BUSINESS 5. Vaping Ordinance Fremont Union High School District (FUHSD) Board Member Rosa Kim requested the Teen Commission advocate for the creation of a Vaping Ordinance in Cupertino which would prohibit the sale of e-cigarette and vaping products around school campuses. Representatives from FUHSD’s IDC supported this Board member Kim’s request. Berkeley, New Orleans, and San Francisco were referenced as cities with vaping ordinances. Staff was requested to check in with staff from the City Manager’s Office for existing efforts or next steps. 6. Youth Engagement & City Budget Director of Administrative Services, Kristina Alfaro, and Finance Manager, Zach Korach, presented on Budget & Bites, an upcoming community engagement event which would teach the Cupertino community about the City’s budget. The Teen Commission was requested for feedback, event support, and to share the event on their social media. 7. Teen Commission and Cupertino Library Collaboration The Cupertino Library Teen Advisory Board requested to collaborate with the Teen Commission on TedX Talk, an upcoming Ted-talk event created by teens featuring teen speakers. Commissioner Venkatasubramanian motioned to collaborate with the Cupertino Library Teen Advisory Board on the joint TedX event. Commissioner Subramanyam seconds the motion. Motion passes with 7 yes votes. Chair Vemula absent. STAFF & COMMISSION REPORTS a) Staff Liaison Report  N/A b) Commissioner Report  Commissioner Shearin provided an update on City traffic projects. MISCELLANEOUS - NO ACTION REQUIRED ADJOURNMENT At 8:28 pm the Teen Commission adjourned to a REGULAR MEETING which will be held on April 10, 2019 at 6:00pm at Quinlan Community Center, 10185 N.
