FAC 09-28-2020 MINUTES FINE ARTS COMMISSION Monday, September 28, 2020 FINE ARTS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER Chair Mahalingam called the meeting to order at 6:33 p.m. via virtual teleconference. ROLL CALL Commissioners present: Rajeswari Mahlingam, Janki Chokshi, Sonia Dhami, Diana Matley Commissioners absent: Sudha Kasamsetty Staff present: Joanne Magrini, Kelsey Hayes Guest speakers: Jason Bisely APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Meeting of July 27, 2020 Commissioner Chokshi motioned to approve the draft minutes. Commissioner Dhami seconded. Motion passed with 4 votes yes. CEREMONIAL MATTERS AND PRESENTATIONS 2. Parks and Recreation Senior Programming Presentation from Recreation Coordinator Jason Bisely Jason Bisely shared a presentation about the Cupertino Senior Center and senior programming. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS None OLD BUSINESS 3. Update on the Emerging, Distinguished, and Young Artist Award Programs Commissioners discussed how they have been promoting the award programs. Commissioner Chokshi has advertised the programs to the Fine Arts League of Cupertino. Artists will be submitting work from that organization. Commissioner Chokshi has also promoted the Young Artist award program to various art teacher groups online. Commissioner Mately has reached out to Hongyun Art, who will be promoted the program to their students. Commissioner Dhami has been talking about the programs to neighbors and friends. Commissioner Mahlingam has been promoting it to personal friends, on Facebook, Twitter, Nextdoor and has sent emails to the Vice Principals of Monta Vista High School and Lynbrook High School, asking them to share the programs with the schools art teachers. Staff Liaison, Kelsey Hayes, showed the commission where the artist programs are located and how they are being promoted on the City website. Commissioners asked about the programs being promoted on PeachJar, Nextdoor and the Scene. Staff will research those options. Upcoming assignments for the staff liaison—send award submittals and rating sheets to commissioners one week prior to the November 23 meeting. Research virtual award ceremony for award winners and figure out when winners can be presented at a City Council meeting. 4. Update on Art in Unexpected Places Staff updated the commission about the previously identified location at Blackberry Farm and recommended an alternate location for the project that is owned by the City of Cupertino. Commissioners agreed that moving forward with the alternate location would work. Staff liaison will send commissioners additional photos of the new location, along with the dimensions of the wall. Staff will also reach out to the artist with an update on the new location. 5. Art in Unexpected Places for Upcoming Projects Commissioners and staff reviewed several previously identified locations for Art in Unexpected Places. It was discussed that moving forward, all locations would be thoroughly vetted by City staff to ensure the property was owned by the City of Cupertino. Commissioner Chokshi asked if alternate locations could be identified, such as internal walls in facilities. NEW BUSINESS None STAFF AND COMMISSION REPORTS 6.
