CALL TO ORDER
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairperson Janet Mohr and Commissioners, Martha Bills, Nancy Canter, Hema
Kundargi (7:10). Staff present: City Clerk Kimberly Smith and City Architect Terry Greene.
Guests: Mary L. Hanna (Kay Hanna & Associates), Jane Vaughan (Menlo Equities).
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
1. Minutes of the regular meeting of February 22, 2005.
Commissioner Martha Bills moved to moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting
of February 22, 2005. Commissioner Nancy Canter seconded and motion passed
unanimously.

COMMISSIONER REPORTS
2. Arts related news updates ITom Commissioners.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
3. Update ITom subcommittee to identifY potential art locations in the Cupertino Library.
Commissioner Hema Kundargi reported that she had met with the County Librarian and
conveyed the message that the Fine Arts Commission is interested in fucilitating the
process. No response ITom the library has been received.
4. Status report on Fine Arts Commission public hearing including site location for Cyrus the
Great and master plan for art in Cupertino.
City Architect Terry Greene reported that Fariba Nejat had met with an Iranian artist who
works in London. He indicated that there is a general agreement to do Cyrus in bronze
with a granite base. He also reported that he and Fariba would be meeting with a structural
engineer for the job. The Commission concluded that working on a master plan for art
locations in the city was not feasible at this time.

5. Update on status of Council adoption of Guidelines for the Selection of Public Art.
City Clerk Kimberly Smith reported that Council approved the Guidelines and she will
distribute a copy to the Commission.
NEW BUSINESS
6. Presentation ITom artist Mary Hanna regarding art work required under use permit for the
Menlo Equities project at the comer of Stevens Creek Boulevard and Wolfe Road.
Jane Vaughan, Menlo Equities, updated the Commission on the project. She indicated that
the art would be placed at the comer of Wolfe Road and Stevens Creek Boulevard and that
the art would be geared more towards drivers rather than by pedestrians. She stated that
the piece would be very significant and visible during day as well as at night.
Mary Hanna, Kay Hanna & Associates, reported that the proposed artwork for this sight
was called "Little Tree". She stated that the sculpture was 10OOÆ, stainless steel, and
measures 10 feet high and 6 feet wide with brushed and painted steel. The foundation will
be concrete with rebar and a structural engineer will handle the foundation and submit
plans to the Planning Department. She indicated that the art has a "wonderful universal
appeal" and "has inherent joy - nice energy to it, upward looking feel to it". She stated that
it is a "celebration of nature in an abstract way". She reported that lighting is planned for
night viewing and the art should be placed by the end of October.
The Commission inquired about issues of safety and maintenance. Jane V "'.ghan indicated
that Menlo Equities will own and maintain the art, and that it will stay with the property.
Commissioners felt the artwork had a "human quality and tree like quality" to it as well as
a "visually pleasing texture". Commissioner Nancy Canter moved to approve the sculpture ,
"Little Tree". Commissioner Herna Kundargi seconded and motion passed unanimously.
7. Presentation ITom City Architect Terry Greene regarding Mary Avenue Pedestrian
Footbridge and the artwork that will be incorporated into it.
City Architect Terry Greene discussed the background on the Mary Avenue footbridge. He
indicated that funding efforts have been underway since 2001 and additional funding will
be taking place due to increases in material costs. He also presented a slide presentation on
the bridge design and indicated that the City will be maintaining the bridge which is about
13 acres. The bridge is expected to open in January 2007.
8. Presentation ITom Diana Argabrite, Euphrat Museum of Art, regarding plaque for
Children's Tile Wall at the Quinlan Community Center.
City Clerk Kimberly Smith reported that the plaque for the children's tile wall is complete
but the tiles have not yet been fired. She distributed the text for the plaque.
9. Consider changing meeting schedule to every other month. Additional meetings could be
called as needed.

City Clerk Kimberly Smith reported that all Commissions were being requested to meet
every other month or as needed. City Clerk will prepare a calendar and distribute it to the
Commission at the April meeting. The Commission will determine their meeting schedule
at the April meeting upon review of the calendar.
