Subject: Provide input for Adopt-A-Bench artwork on bench located in the City of Cupertino
Dear Cupertino Fine Arts Commission:
On behalf of the Santa Clara Valley Water District (Valley Water), we are requesting input from the
Cupertino Fine Arts Commission (Arts Commission) on an artwork that will be installed on our existing
bench located within the City of Cupertino boundaries. Valley Water’s Public Arts Program works on
collaborations with community stewards and local artists to beautify Valley Water infrastructure through
their expressive artwork. This year, Valley Water is piloting the Adopt-A-Bench Project (Project) in
which seven of our existing Valley Water benches throughout Santa Clara County will have updated
interpretive art. On January 23, 2020, Valley Water staff emailed the City of Cupertino (City) staff and
informed them of our plan to install the new artwork on our existing bench located at 10706 Par 3
Drive, Cupertino, CA 95014, with the Arts Commission’s input. The bench is on Valley Water property
and the Project and its maintenance is fully funded by Valley Water.
On March 10, 2020, Valley Water’s Board of Directors approved the artwork presented (Attachment 1).
The artwork was uniquely developed by Valley Water’s Youth Commission which consists of high
school students throughout Santa Clara County, in partnership with local artist Paul J. Gonzalez. The
Youth Commission and Mr. Gonzalez received input from Valley Water biologists familiar with the
region of the creek. The artwork for this specific bench features Stevens Creek and the native bird
species Ridgway’s rail, raising awareness of and highlighting the local creek’s fauna and natural
environment.
Upon the Arts Commission’s input of the bench artwork, next steps include a potential social distancing
painting event in which Valley Water’s Youth Commission will paint artwork on the bench tiles,
installation of the artwork onto the bench, and an end-of-project event to celebrate the success of the
Youth Commission’s excellent work in this pilot project. Accordingly, these activities and their
scheduling are dependent upon the County of Santa Clara's public health guidance in response to
COVID-19.
We appreciate the City of Cupertino Fine Arts Commission’s assistance in this public arts effort and we
look forward to presenting the Project to the Arts Commission on June 8th. If you have any questions
or comments, please feel free to contact Peggy Lam at 408-912-0088 or plam@valleywater.org.

Art mural project proposal
Wall of Blackberry Farm
Respected Members of the
City of Cupertino &
Fine Art Commission,
I’m an artist residing in Santa Clara County and a member of the Fine Art League of Cupertino. I am
taking the opportunity to respond to your call for a 30’ mural on the Blackberry Farm wall. I have painted
murals for Schools, the City of Santa Clara, Sikh Community organizations and undertaken private
commissions. I’ve had the opportunity as an Art Teacher to create murals with students too, as such I feel
I have ample experience to undertake this project.
Artistic vision: Since the theme is Natural habitat, flora, and fauna, I have prepared the design after
taking a good look at the place and making notes of the different species of nature to be found there. This
mural will not only enhance the area and show the local community that we need to preserve this
disappearing natural habitat for our future generations to enjoy, but it will also serve as a visual of the
different varieties of nature to be found in that area. My design includes kids to represent our future; in
one of the three designs, I’m presenting. Multicultural kids reflect the mixed culture of the City of
Cupertino. In my second design, I have varied it by showing just one kid to represent future generations.
The third design just focuses on the Natural habitat and the fauna and flora. I’m open to combining any
particular element to any design that is selected. The actual mural will have more details that cannot be
brought out in this smaller draft version.
As mentioned by you the theme is:
-The natural habitat, fauna, and flora
-Area 6’x30’
-Materials to be used:
I will not be using house paints which are cheaper but will not be as vibrant or longer-lasting. Instead, I
will use Artist acrylic paints.
Multiple colors will be used -greens, reds, oranges, yellows, blue. Lilac, browns, black, white

GEETA TANEJA - DESIGN CONCEPT SUBMISSION FOR ART IN UNEXPECTED PLACES
As an artist, we get opportunities to express ourselves across various mediums and environments. Large scale
Murals are one of my most passionate forms of expression. The ability to create a centerpiece for the
Cupertino Community to cherish and enjoy gives me immense pleasure and pride.
Many of my previous murals, whether it was the entrance of the school for physically disabled children in
Malaysia, or the entire nursery wall for a new born baby, flora and fauna have played a central theme in the
design and aesthetic of my murals.
So this theme, is very close to my heart and I have created three samples ( made on a paper of the size 30”X6”
as same proportionate to wall 30’X6’) to highlight the Californian Flora and Fauna, that I have come to enjoy
and cherish, being a proud Californian. The color choices reflect the diverse spectrum that encompass our
beautiful state and the key elements include animals, birds and foliage that covers us from border to border.
I look forward to the opportunity to create this for the Fine Arts Commission of Cupertino, as a part of the Art
in Unexpected Places.
MATERIALS LIST AND COST ESTIMATE (30 FEET X 6 FEET MURAL)
• Weather proof, environment friendly, water based exterior paints. Vibrant colors and their hues (Nippon
or equivalent quality external use paints. Approximately 10 shades of one liter each, will be used directly
or mixed together. Total approximately 10 liters of Paint to be consumed.
• Primer on the wall --- One Gallon (Nippon external use)
• Other material --- Large brushes, tray, rags, paint cleaner, protective paper, tapes, stationary material,
garbage bags etc.
Total expected value of the material is approximately $500. This estimate is with the assumption that the wall
will be in a condition ready for painting.
Regarding safe handling, most of the paints are water based and therefore, they are safe. Spillage and
dropping will be avoided by taping the paper at all required places and will be disposed of after completion of
work in places where such disposal is allowed.
TIMELINE FOR COMPLETING THE MURAL
Due to Covid 19, it is uncertain as to when the project will start and end. But from the information provided, I
presume it is for six weeks from the start date.
The first two weeks will be for meeting concerned authorities, arranging material, preparation of the wall with
primer and sketching with pencil. The following three weeks would be for painting the flora and fauna sketch
on the wall and filling it with color. I also have commitment from other artists from our club as well as
children volunteers who would like to be a part of this community wall building exercise. The final week
would be adding the finishing touches as well as for cleaning the area around the wall.
