LIBRARY NEWS
On Tuesday, November 19, Cupertino City Council voted
4-0 to approve a two-story conceptual design for a
program room expansion onto Cupertino Library. An
additional $3,000,000 was also allocated to the project
from the city's general fund. We look forward to continuing
to work with the city of Cupertino on this project, and thank
those who spoke at this meeting in favor of it.
Cupertino Library also welcomes librarian Maggie Lai to our staff! Maggie will be a
part of our Children's Services team, focused on implementing Go Go Biblio
outreach service to the Cupertino community.

This month was Dinovember at the Cupertino Library! We celebrated with a series of Dinosaur
Playdough Extravaganzas which saw 230 families creating their own dinosaur models. Over 100
families joined us for our epic Dinosaur Dance and 24 families learned how to crochet their own
dinosaur during our Art in the Afternoon program. We thank the Friends of the Cupertino Library
for supporting Dinovember!

ADULT PROGRAMS
NOVEMBER 2019 LIBRARY OUTREACH
In November we hosted a Medicare enrollment
program for Mandarin -speaking patrons, with 12
attendees. We continue to partner with
Sourcewise to host 1-1 Medicare enrollment
appointments as needed. Our Wellness: An
Introduction to Herbalism lecture was also well
attended, with video now available at
http://bit.Iy/cupertinolibra rywellnessvideos. Many
thanks to the Cupertino Library Foundation for
supporting our 2019 Wellness series, and to the city
of Cupertino's video team for filming our Wellness
lectures.

Regular outreach efforts continued, with visits to Cupertino preschools, as well as elementary and
high schools. Library staff visited the Cupertino Senior Center to present book discussions and
instruction on accessing Kanopy and Medici.TV on the library's website.

advantage of local museum passes? Discover & Go is a virtual
museum pass program for Santa Clara County Library District

Holiday Food Drive
The holidays are nearly upon us, a time for family, friends
and giving thanks. SCCLD continues our Holiday Food
Drive through Jan 10, 2020 at all locations including the
Services and Support Center. All food donations go to
Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, whose mission is to
provide meals to those in our communities who are food
insecure. Last year, we collected 6,705 pounds of food
items, enough to provide 5,588 nutritious meals.

Please bring non-perishable canned and boxed items you
can spare to any one of our libraries, including the Bookmobile, to help those less fortunate enjoy the
holiday season. A list of the most needed items is available at http://bit.ly/2JmWitH/. With of our
libraries now open 7 days per week, together, we can make someone else's holidays brighter.

STEM at the Library
PURPOSE
Provide opportunities for patrons of all ages to learn
about STEM.

10 different types of tech kits available with components,
instructions and lessons prepared.
RESULTS
Variety and frequency of STEM programs increased
across SCCLD with most popular programs including
Ozobots for grades 3-12 and Cubelets for ages 4+.

CONSUMER HEALTH
PURPOSE
Support the health and wellness of our community.

Provide consumer health education on a wide variety of
subjects and resources including the Headspace app for
meditation.
RESULT. -
Received the 2019 Urban Libraries Council Innovation
Award for Headspace App. In the first 3months, 8,400
meditation completed for almost 85,000 minutes.

Provide education and support for our at -risk youth and their
families in Gilroy.

Rise Up is a partnership with the Gilroy Library, County District
Attorney's office, Department of Family and Child Services and
the South County Youth Task Force to improve the lives and
outcomes of at -risk youth and their families.

Over 200 participants with 80% indicating they learned
something to take away, 80% were first time library program
attendees and 90% will personally apply the learnings.
Received the 2019 California State Association of Counties
Challenge Award.

FOOD FORFINES
PURPC -
Provide patrons with outstanding fines/fees an invitation
and dignified opportunity to return to the library.
ESCRIPTION
In the month of April, SCCLD waived up to $100 in
fines/fees in exchange for a food donation.
RESULT
In two years, 14,274 patrons participated in Food for Fines
with 87% regaining borrowing status. SCCLD waived
$277,189 (avg $19.42/patron) and collected over 35 tons of
food N60,000 meals for Second Harvest Food Bank.

Following the Gilroy Garlic Festival tragedy,
the Gilroy Library worked closely with the City
of Gilroy and County District Attorneys office
and became the destination for the support
organization meetings, client intake,, victim
services and more.
