FAC 10-24-00 City of Cupertino FINE ARTS COMMISSION Regular Meeting October 24, 2000 ° o ° CALL TO ORDER At 7:34 p.m. Vice Chairperson Carl Orr called the meeting to order in Conference Room A, Cupertino City Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue. ROLL CALL Present: Vice Chairperson Carl Orr, Commissioners Stephen Beard, Hema Kundargi, Janet Mohr, Mary Sievert, Rita Young Absent: Chairperson Charlene Pai City staff present: City Clerk Kimberly Smith, Recording Secretary Dorothy Steenfott Guests: Diana Argabrite APPROVAL OF MINUTES Young moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of September 26, 2000. Kundargi seconded and motion passed unanimously with Pai absent. OLD BUSINESS A. Fine Arts Grants Mohr reported that the ad hoc committee recommended the following grants: $1,000 to Cherry Blossom Festival, $1,000 to the Chinese Performing Artists, $500 to the Bay Area Showcase Chorus, and $1,500 to the California Youth Symphony. The ad hoc committee also recommended that the Chinese Performing Artists provide advertising materials to the Commission prior to the event. Mohr moved to approve the ad hoc committee recommendations. Sievert seconded and motion passed unanimously with Pai absent. October 24, 2000 Fine Arts Commission Page 2 Co Art in Public Places - Report from ad hoc committee of Beard, Sievert, Young Beard distributed pictures of city parks taken by the ad hoc committee and described places where art could complement the park setting. It was determined that the Fine Arts Commission would make a presentation to council identifying promising locations. The Parks and Recreation Commission would also be included in the process. The ad hoc committee will prepare a proposal and illustrations to review at the next meeting. Commission Goals. Kundargi reported that she and Young met with Diana Argabrite (Euphrat Museum's Arts in Schools Program) regarding the children's art mural project. Argabrite discussed initial concepts with a central theme of "sharing and community". She stated that a simple mural would cost approximately $25 per square foot, a moderately detailed mural would be approximately $40 per square foot and a complex topic would be approximately $75 per square foot. Argabrite will return with samples of children's work, which could be used for decorative tiles, as well as more specifics about the size and cost. Orr reported that the Public Works Department expressed interest in his proposal to place art on city vehicles, pending council approval. Four Seasons Plaza City Clerk updated the Commission on the hotel status. COMMISSIONER AND LIAISON REPORTS A. Selection of representative for Mayor's breakfast.
