REQUEST:  Pursue agreements with CUSD and FUHSD to add parks and rec access to the following schools: Lawson Middle School Sedgewick Elementary School All FUHSD high schools in Cupertino This would quickly add park acreage and resources for Cupertino. It would also increase the park acreage for the eastern portion of Cupertino which is sorely lacking parks. CUSD: Pursue an agreement with CUSD to add Lawson Middle School and Sedgewick Elementary School to the list of facilities available to residents of Cupertino. BACKGROUND: Lawson MS used to be called “Collins Elementary” before it moved to the old Portal site and it was always available to the public and covered in the CUSD contract with the City. Our tax dollars were used to convert Lawson to a middle school. The City’s contract with CUSD never got updated to add Lawson once it was opened as a middle school. Carol Atwood, the previous Parks and Rec Director, was aware of this and was working on getting it added but retired before it happened. Currently, CUSD keeps the track and field, tennis courts and basketball hoops open during daylight hours due to public outcry for equal access (Lawson was the only school in CUSD that was being locked, preventing public use of the grounds.) They may not agree to the City “scheduling” their field but they probably would allow unorganized public use when they are not using it. Also, I heard their tennis courts need work. CUSD and the City could both benefit if the City would help make repairs in exchange for public use. FUHSD: Pursue an agreement with FUHSD to allow access to selected facilities at each of our local high schools. BACKGROUND: Currently, the FUHSD has opened up the high school tracks and fields for public use (when not in use) as a thank you to the public for their bond measure support. The fields are locked every night which requires a paid person to do it. These high schools also have tennis courts, pools, etc. Some of these facilities might be able to be used if an agreement can be made. It’d be nice if the bathrooms at the stadium were open and available to the public but that may be too much to ask.
