Stelling Rd, Cupertino, CA 95014 CALL TO ORDER@ 6:05pm PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL APPROVED MINUTES Commissioners Present: Shearin, Chan, Sahni, Tan, Krishnan, Lau, Tardy: Rajaram, Subramanyam Absent: Vemula Staff Present: Daniel Mestizo MINUTES FROM PREVIOUS MEETING 1. April 25, 2018 -Commissioner Sahni motions to approve minutes. Commissioner Tan seconds motion . Motion passes unanimously. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS • None. OLD BUSINESS 2. Teen Stress Media Contest-Check-in The Teen Commission decided to extend the deadline for the Teen Stress Media Contest. Commissioners decided to increase marketing efforts and made suggestions for website improvements. 3. Teen Destress Event More details were discussed on a potential event which would take place either over the summer or in September. NEW BUSINESS 4. Parks and Recreation Master Plan -Round table Discussion Gail Seeds, Parks Improvement Manager, addressed the Commission to review proposed plans for Memorial Park and the future of parks in Cupertino. The Commission expressed their different opinions and features of Memorial Park which were important to teens. Gail Seeds also encouraged them to come to the May 17th Memorial Park Public Workshop, and spread the word to their peers and parents . 5. Neighborhood Events Program David Chen and Kristina Hastings from the newly formed Neighborhood Events program presented the Teen Commission with this new initiative. They requested teen insight on the program and suggested potential collaborations for youth and teen components to this event. 6. Disaster Preparedness You th Involvement Clare Franca villa, Emergency Services Coordinator, visited the Teen Commission to present on the new Emergency Preparedness Fair. She requested help on recruiting teen volunteers for the event, volunteer translators for printed material, and suggestions on getting youth involved in this field. The Teen Commission provided names of clubs and potential contacts. 7. Breathe California Spokesperson Training for Youth Commissions Michelle Lam from Breathe California gave a spokesperson training to the Teen Commission. This training informed them how to be advocates in the community, and gave them an understanding of policy, advocacy, and processes to bring policy change. The focus was on tobacco re lated issues such as smoke free outdoor dining and ba1ming flavored tobacco products. STAFF & COMMISSION REPORTS a) Staff Liaison Report Daniel Mestizo presented the Teen Commission with the following information: o NIA. b) Commissioner Report • Commissioner Tan and Shearin attended the Volunteer Fair and feedback was given. MISCELLANEOUS -NO ACTION REQUIRED ADJOURNMENT At 8:56 pm the Teen Commission adjourned to a REGULAR MEETING which will be held on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 6 :00pm in the Conference Room of the Quinlan Community Center, 10185 North Stelling Road, Cupertino.
