LIB 07-01-2015City of Cupertino Library Commission Regular Meeting July 1, 2015 MEETING MINUTES 1. CALL TO ORDER At 7:04pm Commissioner Ho called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue, in Conference Room C Cupertino. 2.ROLL CALL Commissioners: Jerry Liu, Annie Ho, Ann Stevenson, Gopal Kumarappan, City/County Library Staff: Gayathri Kanth, Nancy Howe, Nidhi Mathur Absent: Rose Grymes Guest: None 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Commissioner Liu moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of June 3, 2015. Commissioner Kumarappan seconded and the motion passed unanimously. 4. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS A. Cupertino Community Librarian Report Library staff member reported a successful All Night Teen Hack-A-Thon event. Of the 110 teen participants, 64 were new to the event and noted increase of girls participating this year. There were 25 teen mentors/presenters on hand to help with questions and they all gave a one minute video presentation. Teens were enthusiastic and highly energetic during the entire event. Three minute presentation was given by students. There were four categories: beginners, software, education and social. Amazing projects grew out of this 12 hour session and both participants and staff enjoyed the event. Other events at the library included: “Everyday Hero’s” theme, park ranger brought in snake to educate kids on local wildlife, news reporter came in and kids were amazed to see what a tape recorder is (old technology for most since none had seen one before). The Cupertino Library Foundation was funding for this program. . B. County Librarian Report County Librarian Nancy Howe reported that Teen Community Garden project won Honorable Mention Award from Urban Library Council at National Conference. Thanks goes to Matt Lorenzo for helping to create the green space and Hack-A-Thon. The Library Innovation Award was awarded to Matt. Ms. Howe reported on a child abduction situation at Milpitas Library; however, child was found. When alert goes out transit was also notified. An alert bus driver noticed description of 20-year old male with child and was able to calmly handle the situation and have the child safety reunited with parent. Story made to the local news headlines and bus driver was recognized for his part in helping to keep the community safe. The library continues to work with the sheriff’s department on preventative measures to keep all library patrons safe. County of Santa Clara reached a tentative labor accord to avert possible strike and has been settled. Library card fee was waived off as of today. Updated brochures reflect new policy for library cards. New software migration for the library has been completed. The county is working out software glitches with vendor. There was not enough time to test due to installation deadline. C. Friends of the Library Report No written report. Sponsor celebration for Hack-A- Thon. D. Cupertino Library Foundation Report Written report from Eno Schmidt was received. E. Others None F. Commission Report Commissioner Liu reported on helping out at the Hack-A-Thon and was impressed that 60% of participants were first time attendees. The twelve hour hacking event went from 7 pm to 7 am. Teens met with their teams, figured out what needed to be done, they worked on coding, and then presented their pitch in video format. If the team was a finalist, they went on stage to make a presentation. Topics included: 3-D (software), Stay Awake, Tutoring, and Music/Synthesizing. Projects were all good and showed students creativity. Commissioner Stevenson spoke on attending an All Day Workshop sponsored by United for Library Association (where Nancy Howe spoke as panel member). The workshop addressed issue of how to come together to work through differences. B. Staff Report Staff Liaison, Nidhi Mathur reported on fun events planned for summer. Parks & Recreation is presenting Cinema Sundown at Blackberry Farms and spoke about movies being shown. The list of movies and dates showing will be in the current issue of Cupertino Scene. Cupertino 60th Anniversary will be celebrated during the Silicon Valley Fall Festival scheduled on September 12. For details, commissioner can check Cupertino Scene or city website. C. Mayor’s Meeting Commissioner Ho reported on the mayor’s meeting. The Fourth of July Firework show was cancelled this year. Mayor was interviewed by NY Times regarding cancellation. Water conservation, safety and money were cited as reasons for this cancellation. Other events were held at Quinlan and Blackberry Farms for the Fourth of July celebration. She reported there will be more transparency with new development process, when applicant submits project to planning department, applicant has to list what community benefit is in development agreement before signing contract. 6. OLD BUSINESS A. 2015 Work Plan Discussion Commissioner Jerry was thanked for his draft. Discuss adding cell phone towers for 2015. Demonstrate to public/residents safety of cell phone towers. If it meets all regulations (federal/state) cannot object to installation since there are strict regulations on this. Commissioner Ho mentioned, as the library, we need to inform and give facts about this issue, educate and make public aware. 2015 Work plan sections were discussed. B. Poet Laureate Commissioner Stevenson reported on the extension for application deadline to July 17th and will be posted in this week’s issue of The Courier. Change of the Poet Laureate terms will now run from January 1st for 2 years. From October to January, old and newly appointed Poet Laureates will work together. New Poet Laureate will be announced in October. The reception for the new Poet Laureate will be on January 7. The venue for the reception is to be determined. C. City Council Presentation Commissioner Ho will draft a letter and sent to the City Council in support of library story room expansion. 6. NEW BUSINESS A. None 7. AGENDA BUILDING Move to looking into paying for memberships to United for Library. Motion was seconded and supported. ADJOURN MENT The meeting was adjourned at 8:48 pm.
