MEETING MINUTES
1. CALL TO ORDER
At 7:01 pm Commissioner Ho called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall,
10300 Torre Avenue, in Conference Room C Cupertino.
2. ROLL CALL

ORAL COMMUNICATION
Commission Chair Ho welcomed the council member Savita Vaidhyanathan and
introduced the commissioners to her.
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Grymes moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of May
6, 2015. Commissioner Stevenson seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
3. PRESENTATION BY PROJECT MANAGER, PUBLIC WORKS, MS. KATY JANSEN
Ms. Katy Jensen, the Capital Improvement Program Manager for Cupertino, reported
the proposed Library Story Room expansion project which is part of the Civic Center
Master Plan. She showed the artistic renderings of the proposed scenarios for the
library expansion She stated that the library expansion is part of the bigger Civic
Center Master Plan which is scheduled to go to City Council with the detail Master
Plan document and other related appendices documents on July 7th, and will be
available on the city website during the last week of June. She suggested the
commissioners to continue to show their support for the Library Story Room
expansion.
4. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
A. Cupertino Community Librarian Report
Cupertino Librarian, Ms. Kanth, introduced the new Deputy County Librarian for
SCCLD, Chris Brown. She reported on STEAM LEADS Superhero School which
was offered in March, April and May was very successful and was attended by 81
kids. The plan is to have this program returning this fall, for middle school students
this time with a yearlong Zombie Apocalypse. Jim Gill in His 2015 Family Room
Tour was attended by over 200 children and caregivers and was part of part of the
Family Reading Action Team’s Every Child Ready to Read training for families.
Every Hero Has a Story: Cupertino Library Summer Challenge for Kids Summer
Reading Program is underway for kids from birth to 8th grade.. A Picture-Worthy
Mother’s Day Craft was also a popular event attended by over 40 kids where they
assembled picture frames out of Popsicle sticks, and then showed their creativity by
to decorating the frames. Library is organizing an overnight hack-a-thon event for
teenagers ages 14 – 18 providing an opportunity for the next generation of
programmers, hardware enthusiasts, and all-around tech lovers to join together and
bring their coolest, most innovative ideas to life and win some awesome prizes in the
process. Library will market this event at all avenues. One noteworthy adult program
is screening of Julius Caesar and Antony & Cleopatra under Globe on Screen series at
Bluelight Cinema.
B. County Librarian Report
County Librarian Nancy Howe reported that all county libraries including Cupertino
will be closed June 3 for software migration. Library patrons will not have access to
online library accounts. Systems software upgrade enhancements will include a fresh
new look for SCCLD’s online library catalog, improved search functionality, and
access to more book reviews. 2015 Summer Challenge Underway with the theme of
Every Hero Has A Story. This year summer challenge encourages participants to
complete selected tasks in a quest to explore library resources, enjoy enriching and
creative experiences, and try new activities. While some tasks may be as easy as
reading a book or reciting a poem, other activities inspire them to venture outside and
explore surrounding areas, discovering individual strengths and interests along the
way. Participants can sign up for the program either online or on paper. Complete
instructions can be found at SCCLD’s Summer Challenge website at
www.sccl.org/summer-reading. Beginning July 1, Library will begin issuing free
library cards to non-district residents of all ages. Commissions will receive monthly
reports on usage increases so that we can monitor the impact. Also, the Joint Powers
Authority Library Board decided to increase the Community Room reservation fee to
$25.00 for four hours of use from a $10.00 flat fee, Cupertino will not be impacted by
this fee gain. The next Joint Powers Authority Library Board meeting is on June 4.
Commissioner Liu noted some of the upcoming technology pilots in FY15-16 budget
such as self-vending library units and mobile device labs and asked that Cupertino be
considered as a pilot site for these initiatives. Commissioner Liu also asked for usage
information at other SCCLD libraries as a baseline to evaluate the service load at
Cupertino Library and Ms. Howe will follow up on this request.

5. REPORTS
A. Commission Report
Commissioner Liu reported on a meeting he attended with County Librarian
Nancy Howe, Community Librarian Gayathri Kanth, and Council Member
Darcy Paul. They discussed budget for the Cupertino Library and toured the
library site to consider the various options for library expansion. Commission
Grymes reported on the June 3rd Mayor meeting. Commissioner Ho shared she
will continue to work on the Sustainability Speakers Series. Commissioner
Kumarappan shared his initiatives on education.

Commissioner Chair, Ho will send the mayor’s meeting minutes for July
meeting.
6. OLD BUSINESS
A. 2015 Work Plan Discussion
Commissioners Ho and Liu will form a subcommittee to work on a work plan
draft to be reviewed by the entire commission at the next meeting.
B. Poet Laureate
Commissioner Stevenson passed out informational flyers about the Poet
Laureate Applications and encouraged the commissioners to let people know
about them.
6. NEW BUSINESS
A. City Council Presentation
This item was discussed and the commission agreed to discuss it further at the
July commission meeting to prepare to speak at the July 7 City Council
meeting.
