6. REPORTS
A. Commissioner Report
Commissioner Liu reported that he visited STEAM Leads Coding class. He
raised the point of having a cell tower discussion forum led by a neutral party
and sponsored by the Library Commission. The idea was raised about possibly
utilizing the Women’s League of Voters to moderate. He mentioned that this
type of forum could be used for other issues, such as the GPA, Vallco,
Parkside and the Civic Center Master Plan. Commissioner Ho mentioned that
the City of Cupertino Sustainability Department will be hosting Earth Day
activities on Saturday, April 11th. Commissioner Stevenson reported about the
Poet Laureate process. Bev Lenihan is chairing the selection committee. The
new Poet Laureate will be selected and announced in August or September.
Current Poet Laureate, Jennifer Swanton Brown, will continue to be the Poet
Laureate until the end of the year to enable the new person to shadow her for a
few months. Commissioner Stevenson mentioned the Persian Poetry New
Year Event which took place in late March. Mayor Sinks attended. Poems
were presented in Farsi and English. Nidhi Mathur, City of Cupertino Staff
Liaison to the Library Commission, volunteered to be on the Poet Laureate
Selection Committee and can assist in marketing. Commissioner Grymes
discussed her reticence about having a cell tower debate because it legitimizes
both points of view. Originally she wanted to have children provide
information to their parents about cell towers so raised the debate idea to
provide the science around cell towers. She mentioned possibly doing a
science experiment that can be on display in the Library to aid in learning
about cell towers. Commissioner Liu mentioned that he has a contact at the
Tech Museum and could discuss plans of doing a science exhibit.
Commissioner Grymes suggested that for the 2015 Work Plan,
Commissioners select a smaller number of projects that many of them would
like to address..
C. Staff Report
None
D. Mayors meeting
Commissioner Kumar provided information about the April Mayor’s Meeting.
The cell tower issue was raised at the meeting, which included discussion
about a cell tower at Lynbrook High School in San Jose. He provided the
Mayor an update about the Library Commission meeting and 2015 Work Plan.
Commissioner Kumar brought up the Library Commission’s kiosk idea and
TEDEx. They also discussed using KMTV services to help videotape
Commission videos that can be uploaded onto YouTube. He brought up the
new Parkfinder app which lists Cupertino parks. The Teen Commission
reported about upcoming events. He also mentioned that there was a
discussion about bike safety. Apple has bikes that people are leaving all over
town and the riders ride in a pack of four or more people, causing traffic
obstruction and danger. He reported that there were 7 or 8 Commissions
represented..
8. OLD BUSINESS
A. 2015 Work Plan brainstorm
Commissioner Liu wants to collaborate with organizations to get more people
on smaller projects. For example, getting library support and then funds from
the Foundation has worked in the past. He also mentioned an interest in
including education with improved outreach in the Work Plan along with
library science exhibit. He doesn’t support the debate idea because it can be
confrontational, however he likes the panel discussion idea where a question
is raised and panelists can answer. Commissioner Liu mentioned that the
kiosk idea is beneficial and can be expanded throughout the city. So he would
like to work on education, community events to share issues and getting a
better sense of what people think. Once the Commission comes to a
consensus, the 2015 Work Plan will be provided to Council.
B. New Library Commission picture
Traditionally a group picture of Library Commissioners is taken in the lobby
and hung in the Library. The plan is to take the picture prior to the next
Library Commission meeting.
9. AGENDA BUILDING
A. Continue 2015 Work Plan brainstorm
B. District Library speaker to discuss technology; e-books and digital material
circulation and digital services plans.
