Stelling Rd, Cupertino, CA 95014 APPROVED MINUTES CALL TO ORDER @ 6:09pm PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Chan, Krishnan, Lau, Rajaram, Sahni, Shearin, Subramanyam, Tam, Vemula Tardy: Shearin Staff Present: Mestizo MINUTES FROM PREVIOUS MEETING 1. August 16, 2017 -Commissioner Rajaram motions to approve minutes. Commissioner Sahni seconds motion. Motion passes unanimously. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS • Aditesh Kumar requested the Teen Commission's assistance in getting a 6-8 hour workshop scheduled. The workshop would be for interested teens who want to learn the frameworks and tools to write a simple application • Mike Sanchez from the Fine Arts Commission informed the Teen Commission of the upcoming deadlines for Distinguished Artist of the Year, Emerging Artist of the Year, and Young Artists of the Year awards. OLD BUSINESS NEW BUSINESS 2. Oath of Office The City of Cupertino Oath of Office was given by Cupertino City Clerk, Grace Schmidt. 3. Relationship of the Teen Commission together with the City of Cupertino Public Information Officer Brian Babcock informed commissioners of the importance of their role as City officials and representatives. As Teen Commissioners they are the conduit of youth for Cupertino staff and Cupertino City Council. Community Outreach Specialist Colleen Lettire presented the commission with the Cupertino's outreach efforts, and the different resources available for the Teen Commission. 4. Director's Message Director of Recreation and Community Services Jeff Milkes spoke with the Teen Commission about their close partnership with Cupertino's Recreation Department and the Parks and Recreation Commission. Director Milkes encouraged the teens to think creatively and come up with projects which directly relate to Cupertino teens. 5. Teen Commission policies & procedures Staff Liaison Mesti zo reviewed the Teen Commission Manual and Commissioner's handbook with the Teen Commission 6. Teen Commission meeting logistics Commissioner Sahni motioned to have Teen Commission meetings remain at 6pm for the 2017-2018 term. Commissioner Subramanyam seconds motion. Motion passes unanimously. Commissioner Rajaram motioned to have a meeting on September 20th and cancel the September 27th meeting. Commissioner Krishnan seconds motion. Motion passes unanimously. 7. 2017 -2018 Work Plan Discussion Commissioners brainstormed work plan projects to be decided upon at a later meeting . STAFF & COMMISSION REPORTS a) Staff Liaison Report Daniel Mestizo presented the Teen Commission with the following information: • YAC Social Event -Thursday, October 12th at 6pm . Location TBA. • YAC Attack -Saturday, March 10th , 2018 at 9am. For the first time, Cupertino will be the host city of this teen leadership event. • San Jose Youth Commission staff member reached out to the Cupertino Teen Commission to inform them of their next steps regarding the Day at the Capitol event hosted on August 29 th , 2017. b) Commissioner Report Commissioner Rajaram attended the Mayor's Meeting on September 5th and -presented the Teen Commission with the following information: • Cupertino Scene is useful for reaching the community • Potential partnership opportunity with the Parks & Recreation Commission for a "Boba Ride " and the Sustainability Commission. • Representative from the Technology, Information, and Communications Commission provided feedback regarding the teen hackathon MISCELLANEOUS -NO ACTION REQUIRED ADJOURNMENT At 8:39pm the Teen Commission adjourned to a SPECIAL MEETING which will be held on Wednesday, September 20 th at 6:00pm at the Quinlan Community Center, Conference Room, 10185 North Stelling Road, Cupertino .
