MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
BICYCLE PEDESTRIAN COMMISSION
April 19th, 2017

The meeting was called to order at 7:03 p.m.
ROLL CALL:

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
1) The Commission approved the March 15, 2017 minutes unanimously.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
• David Stillman reminded the commission on the need to use Cupertino email
addresses for communication
• Larry Dean shared that the Bike Boulevard Open House is on Saturday, May 6, at
9:00-12:30, introducing the planned Bike Boulevards to the neighborhoods
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
OLD BUSINESS
2) 2016 Bike Plan Implementation (Stillman)
• Commenced detailed engineering plans for class IV bike lanes on Stevens
Creek Boulevard and McClellan Road, waiting for phasing recommendation.
Start in areas with minimal number of driveways (possibly Main Street
Cupertino area).
3) Bike-to-Work Day Planning (Stillman)
• Thursday, May 11, is Bike-to-Work Day. Energizer station will be setup at
Quinlan Community Center from 7:00-9:00 AM. Expect about 200
participants.
4) Earth Day Family Bike Ride planning (Stillman)
• Saturday, April 22, was Earth Day. Pedal for Planet Ride with bicycle
pedestrian commissioners serving as chaperons. About 7.5 miles through
Cupertino with 80 participants. Start at 10:10 at City Hall, return at 11:40 .
NEW BUSINESS
5) I-280/Wolfe Road Interchange Study Update (Santa Clara County Valley
Transportation Authority)
• VTA informed about the I280/Wolfe Road Interchange project
http://www.vta.org/280wolfe, which is in its initiation phase. Project goals are
to reconfigure the Interchange and improve bike + pedestrian access.
Discussion included the benefits and challenges of the three alternative
proposals (Widened structure, Replacing structure, Diverging Diamond
Interchange).
6) Lawrence-Mitty Property Open House Update (Eschelbeck)
• Potential acquisition of a parcel (about 7 acres) located alongside Lawrence
Expressway and Mitty A venue to expand the existing trail and potentially
develop it for other open space uses. The city organized an Open House on
April 1 to get resident feedback on this potential acquisition and ideas for
potential uses.
