The meeting convened at 4:12 pm
Commissioners Present:, Gary Latshaw, Meera Ramanathan, Vignesh Swaminathan,

Staff: Misty Mersich,Sustainabiltiy Manager; Roger Lee, Assistant Director of Public

Guests: John Zirelli and Suzanne Morrison-Recology; Richard Gertman-Waste
Consultant; Joan Chin, Cupertino resident
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
None.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES -
1. Draft minutes of December 15, 2016 meeting approved with minor edit to add
guest Gilee Coral to list of attendees. Motion by Commissioner Swaminathan, 2nd
by Commissioner Weber. Motion passes 4-0-1 with Chen absent.
STAFF AND COMMISSION REPORTS
Chair Swaminathan and Misty met with Cupertino resident Ram Mohan to discuss
micro grids and hydrogen fuel cell technology . Chair Swaminathan also met with a
landscape vendor with an interest in partnering with the City to educate about water
conservation. Commissioners Latshaw and Chen met with the Librarian and Library
Commission to discuss showing the movie; Before the Flood. They are looking into the
cost of the license . Misty gave staff updates; Silicon Valley Clean Energy-the first
notifications have been mailed on Monday January 23,d, 2017. Which will include those
customers that will be in the 1st enrollment phase ( starting April 2017), which includes
20 % of residential accounts, all small and medium businesses and all municipal
accounts. New hire-The new Sustainability Program Coordinator, Gilee Coral will start
on Monday. Previously she worked for the City of Hayward as a CivicSpark fellow,on
GHG inventory and CAP implementation. Greywater-staff is working on putting
together a series of greywater workshops for residents. Once dates are set, an email will
be sent out to all commissioners. Movies at Earth Day-there is interest from staff to
show movies in Community Hall.
NEW BUSINESS
2 . Subject: Chair and Vice Chair appointments
Commissioners approved Angela Chen as Chair. Motion by Commissioner
Swaminathan, 2nd by Commissioner Ramanathan. Motion passes 4-0-1, with Chen
absent. Commissioners approved Meera Ramanathan as Vice Chair. Motion by
Commissioner Swaminathan, 2nd by Comissioner Latshaw. Motion passes 4-0-1, with
Chen absent.
3 . Subject: Sustainable Strategies for Recycling and Waste
Assistant Director Roger Lee gave a PPT presentation and lesad a discussion to go over
possible strategies for sustainable waste management in Cupertino. He will come back
to the commission to continue the conversation at least 1-2 more times as the staff works
to explore the issue further.
