PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION HELD MAY 10, 2001

I. CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Andy Zander
II. SALUTE TO THE FLAG:
The Chair led the Salute.
III. ROLL CALL:

IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
May minutes not approved.
V. REPORT FROM THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE:
Lieutenant Smedlund infomsed the Commission that Captain Miles has been promoted to
Commander and that the Westside will be getting a Captain to replace Commander Miles.
Lieutenant Smedlund introduced Sergeant Burgess who is in charge of the red light photo
enforcement. Sergeant Burgess advised the Commission that three intersections for
photo enfomement are up and running and will have an official start date of July 1, 2001.
Within a twenty-four hour period there was a total of sixty-five violations at the
intersection of Wolfe Road and Stevens Creek Boulevard.
Lieutenant Smedlund distributed and discussed a memorandum to the Commission
regarding noteworthy incidents that have occurred through the month of April 2001.

Lieutenant Smedlund distributed the monthly crime statistics for the month of April
2001.
Commissioner Zander informed Lieutenant Smedlund that he had talked with the City
Manager regarding the monthly statistics. Both the City Manager and Commissioner
Zander felt it would be worthwhile to review the statistics and make improvements.
Commissioner Zander will meet with Lieutenant Smedlund at a later date to discuss the
statistics.
VI. REPORT FROM COUNTY FIRE:
Chief Sporleder distributed and discussed the fire statistics for the month of March 2001.
VII. COMMISSIONER REPORTS:
Commissioner Darknell attended the Traffic Safety Committee and reported that the city
is interviewing candidates for the position of Traffic Engineer. Commissioner Darknell
also reported that the neighbors around Homestead High School have concerns about
students parking in front of their houses. It is also reported that vehicles are parking in
front Doughnut Wheel on De Anza Boulevard creating a traffic ba?_a~rd.
VIII. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS:
Commissioner Zander talked with the City Manager regarding the statistics from the
Sheriff's Department.
IX. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS:
Commissioner Dor was contacted by Alan Miller pertaining to the possible development
of a school located off of Stevens Canyon Road. Alan Miller has concerns with traffic,
public safety, and the dilution of city services. Commissioner Zander recommended Alan
Miller to contact the Planning Commission to find out the progress of the' development
and to contact the Traffic Safety Committee regarding the concerns on traffic.
X. OLD BUSINESS:
At this time the Commission will not plan an official meeting with the Saratoga Public
Safety Commission. However, Commissioner Darknell will contact the Saratoga
Commission to see if they would like to have an unofficial meeting at a later date.

XI. NEW BUSINESS:
Marsha Garcia with Emergency Preparedness advised the Commission that she has been
getting city staff together to complete a checklist for the Emergency Plan. The City has
performed two emergency exercises and identified several areas they would like to
improve or upgrade such as space, phones and staffing.
Marsha Garcia explained to the Commission that she would like to implement a
memorandum of understanding between the City and local businesses. This program
would allow the city access to facilities to help out .in emergency situations.
XII. ADJOURNMENT:
The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
