PSC 07-12-01 MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION HELD JULY 12, 2001 CONFERENCE ROOM A, CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA 7:30 PM I. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Andy Zander II. SALUTE TO THE FLAG: The Chair led the Salute. III. ROLL CALL: Commissioners Present: Zander, Darknell, Dor, Tice Commissioners Absent: Majewski Staff Present: Richard Gutierrez, Code Enforcement Chief Spofleder, Santa Clara County Fire Captain Bacon, Sheriff's Department Lieutenant Smedlund, Sheriff's Department Sergeant Burgess, Sheriff's Department Staff Absent: None Visitors Present: None IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: May and June minutes approved. V. REPORT FROM THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE: Lieutenant Smedlund introduced Captain Bacon. Captain Bacon has been with the Sheriff's Department for twenty-six years and is very excited to be working in the west valley. Lieutenant Smedlund distributed and discussed the monthly crime statistics for the month of June 2001. Lieutenant Smedlund distributed the year-end reports by the School Resource Officers. Commissioner Zander will contact Lieutenant Smedlund regarding CARES and how the CARES group can be utilized to help out the Sheriff's Office. Commissioner Zander would also like the CARES group to be educated on what they can and cannot do. Public Safety Commission Minutes Regular Meeting of July 12, 2001 Page 2 Sergeant Burgess briefed the Commission on the progress of photo enforcement. As of June 18, 2001, two out of four intersections are up and running. A total of fiRy-two citations have been sent out. Sergeant Burgess advised the Commission that the Lockheed cameras are functioning, however, APAC is having difficulties with their two cameras. VI. REPORT FROM COUNTY FIRE: Chief Sporleder distributed and discussed the fire statistics for the month of May 2001. Chief Sporleder distributed photos and discussed a fire that occurred on June 20, 2001 at Stevens Creek. Chief Spodeder distributed and discussed a structured that occurred on Wild Flower. Chief Sporleder distributed and discussed several brush and structure fires that occurred on John Way. VII. COMMISSIONER REPORTS: Commissioner Zander received the minutes from the Traffic Safety Committee. Commissioner Zander attended the Mayor's Breakfast. Mayor James invited the Public Safety Commission to attend a merchant robbery prevention seminar hosted by the Sheriff's Department. VIII. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS: Concerned citizens made Commissioner Zander aware that the Trail Commission is planning on using Linda Vista Park as a staging area to access the trail to the bay. The neighbors feel that using Linda Vista Park as a staging area will create a safety issue for the community. Commissioner Zander will talk with the City Manager about having a representative from the Trail Commission attend a Public Safety Commission meeting to give an update on the progress of the trail. This will allow the Commission to give feedback to concerned citizens and help with safety issues that may have been overlooked by the Trail Commission. IX. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS: Mayor James sent invites to the Commission to attend a robbery seminar for merchants. _ Public Safety Commission Minutes Regular Meeting of July 12, 2001 Page 3 X.
