- PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION HELD OCTOBER 11, 2001

I. CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Andy Zander
II. SALUTE TO THE FLAG:
The Chair led the Salute.
III. ROLL CALL:
Commissioners Present: Zander, Darknell, Majewski, Dot, and Tice
Commissioners Absent: None
Staff Present: Richard Gutierrez, Code Enforcement
Jeff Trybus, Code Enforcement
Captain Bacon, Sheriff's Department
Chief Sporleder, Santa Clara County Fire
Staff Absent: None
Visitors Present: Carter Robinson
IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
September minutes approved.
V. REPORT FROM THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE:
Captain Bacon distributed and discussed the monthly crime statistics for the month of September 2001.
Captain Bacon advised that the child safety fair was successful and he also noted that 150 car seats were
checked for safety reasons.
Captain Bacon told the Commission that the County is in the process of setting up an emergency procedure
for any emergencies that may occur in the county. He also noted that Federal, State and local agencies are
communicating better and sharing information is becoming easier.
Captain Bacon discussed the red light photo enforcement program and 518 citations have been written to
date with a 100% conviction rate in court. Captain Bacon finally noted that the red light cameras are
working well but the APAC is having problems

VI. REPORT FROM COUNTY FIRE:
Chief Sporleder distributed the monthly statistics for the month of September 2001.
Chief Sporleder told the Commission that he will be retiring at the end of December and he will longer be
attending the Commission meetings.
Chief Sporleder passed out the schedule of activities at the Cupertino Public Schools for fire protection
month.
Chief Sporleder discussed briefly about a memorial service at Memorial Park for the people who lost their
lives during the terrorist attack.
Vll. COMMISSIONER REPORTS:
Concerned citizens contacted Commissioner Der regarding road-closed signs being placed on Stevens
Canyon Road.
Commissioner Zander attended the mayor's breakfast and no major issues were discussed, other than the
location of the new library. Commissioner Zander advised that the new library might be built on the soccer
field south of the library.
Commissioner Zander also noted that the Mayor brought of safety issues at the breakfast and nobody
wanted to discuss the topic.
Commissioner Darknell brought up the question of where persons are expected to park when they attend
the library.
Commissioner Zander advised that HAM radio operators are on increased alert and 3 times more operators
are checking in.

IX. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS:
Commissioners received an invitation from the Fine Arts Committee to attend and see the Childs Tile Art
at the Quinlin Community Center.
X. OLD BUSINESS:
None
XI. NEW BUSINESS:
The Public Safety Commission would like to meet the new traffic engineer and discuss traffic signs on
school grounds. Marsha Garcia is also planning on attending the next meeting.
XII. ADJOURNMENT:
The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
