CALL TO ORDER
At 7:35 p.m. Chairperson Janet Mohr called the meeting to order in Conference
Room A.

ROLL CALL
Present: Chairperson Janet Mohr, Commissioners Stephen Beard, Hema
Kundargi, Carl Off, Charlene Pai (7:38 p.m.), Mary Sievert (7:41 p.m.), Rita
Young.
City staff present: City Clerk Kimberly Smith and Recording Secretary Dorothy
Steenfott

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Off moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of July 27, 1999.
Young seconded and motion carried unanimously.
4.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
City Clerk reported on several written communications which were:
a. A fax from Euphrat Museum showing that the Fine Arts Commission funds
about four percent of their $150,000 budget.
b. Euphrat reception on October 19 - "A Good Read, Selections from the Book
Arts".
c. An announcement that Kerry Ann Gilbertson is the new Development
Associate of the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival.
d. An article regarding Commissioner Kundargi's famous cooking show.
e. Annual Convention for Americans for the Arts in Los Angeles June 10-12.
Commissioners were requested to submit suggestions for a theme.
f. Fine Arts League now has a website with a link from Cupertino's website.
g. October is National Arts & Humanities month.
h. Information and poster on Bravo's "start smart" arts advocacy campaign.

STAFF REPORTS
Commissioners Mohr, Off and Beard volunteered to form an ad hoc committee to
review grants.

6.
NEW BUSINESS
A.
Free Shakespeare in the Park & Distinguished Artist of the Year.
City Clerk reported that the reception held prior to the Shakespeare
performance went well, as did the presentation of the Distinguished Artist
ofthe Year award.
B.
Status report on new grant ideas.
Young reported on the mural idea and suggested that it be advertised in
the Scene to get children to apply to create a design for the mural and then
hiring a muralist. The committee discussed possible ideas to get the
project together. It was decided that it would be best to do the project
through the arts program in conjunction with the Parks & Recreation
Department and co-sponsor the project. City Clerk will contact the
Director of Parks and Recreation regarding a children's art project being
included in the arts program.
C.
Redo events banner with new city logo and colors.
Beard and Sievert will continue to work on the design. City Clerk will
measure the frame and provide the measurements to Sievert.
7.
OLD BUSINESS
A.
Cherry Blossom Festival 2000.
Commissioner Kundargi reported that she sent the letters to the schools
and three schools have responded. She stated she will do follow up phone
calls to determine which schools are interested. The letter was sent to all
schools in the Cupertino Union School District. The felt and other
necessary supplies will be provided to the schools, but this year the
schools will be required to glue any pieces to the felt backing.
B.
Status report on Four Seasons Comer project.
City Clerk reported that the representatives of the property owners will be
meeting with the City Manager in early October to discuss plans for the
hotel.

c.
Status ofletter of support for public art and exhibit space in new city
buildings.
City Clerk reported that the letter is complete, but has not been sent out at
this time until projects are established.
8.
COMMISSIONER AND LIAISON REPORTS
A.
Report on news from Mayor's breakfast
Commissioner Beard reported on the mayor's breakfast. Topics discussed
during the meeting were the new library, the hotel, Shakespeare in the
Park, and Four Seasons Comer.
B.
Select representative to attend next Mayor's breakfast on Thurs., Oct. 14,
at 8:00 a.m.
Commissioner Orr volunteered to attend the breakfast.
