FAC 05-26-98 City of Cupertino FINE ARTS COMMISSION Regular Meeting May 26,1998 1. CALL TO ORDER At 7:35 p.m. Rita Young called the meeting to order in Conference Room A and led the pledge of allegiance. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE 3. ROLLCALL Present: Chairperson Rita Young, Vice Chairperson Janet Mohr, Commissioners Stephen Beard, Hema Kundargi, Carl Off, Charlene Pai-Brizendine (8:00 p.m.), Mary Sievert. City staff present: Recording Secretary Dorothy Steenfott. 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Beard moved to approved the minutes as amended to reflect a correction to Commissioner Ocr's first name from Carol to Carl; Sievert seconded and motion carried with Pai-Brizendine absent. 5. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS A. Notice ofKRON Bay Area Shakespeare Camps in Los Gatos and Cupertino. Discussion developed regarding the notice which did not include the Fine Arts Commission as a sponsor. It was also discussed that the Fine Arts Commission is not listed as a sponsor in the Parks and Recreation Schedule either. Mohr moved that the Fine Arts Commission approach the Parks and Recreation Director to be sure that the Fine Arts Commission is recognized for this year's Shakespeare in the Park production; Sievert seconded. May 26, 1998 6. 7. A. B. Fine Arts Commission Page 2 NEW BUSINESS A. Selection of ad hoc committee for Distinguished Artist of the Year. Nomination deadline is June 22. Committee will consist of2 commissioners plus these other individuals, ifthey are available: one council member, Jan Rindfleisch from the Euphrat Gallery of Art, and Sara Loesch-Frank, last year's winner. Commissioners Kundargi and Young volunteered to serve on the ad hoc committee for this year's Distinguished Artist of the Year panel. OLD BUSINESS Report from the Four Seasons Comer ad hoc committee regarding the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) and draft contract. (Sievert, Young and Beard) Sievert reported on the Four Seasons Comer draft contract and requested comments from the Commission by the end of the month so revisions can be made and forwarded to the City Attorney for review. She suggested that the Commission pay special attention to item number lOin the contract which discusses the right to reproduction of artwork. Cherry Blossom Festival Follow-up, including selection of plaque/trophy, and distribution ofletters from Mayor, videotape, and stipends to schools. Schools need information by August 1998 for the 1999 festival. Staff suggests the appointment of a new ad hoc committee at this time to begin planning immediately. (Pai-Brizendine, Young, Mohr were previous members, new committee must have at least one different person). Young reported that the plaques, letters and checks were distributed during the superintendents meeting. She stated that the presentation went very well. She also stated that she felt that the school districts are leaning towards no competitions in the future and that she'd like to see the exhibit remain non-competitive. An ad hoc committee consisting of Beard, Young, and Kundargi was formed to begin planning for next year's exhibit. Fine Arts Commission May 26, 1998 c. D. E. 8. Page 3 Status report from Cultural Arts Event ad hoc committee regarding the Family Film event. (Mohr, Sievert, and Bob Hopkins from Parks and Recreation Commission) Mohr reported that the ad hoc committee meeting had to be rescheduled. She stated that a January date has been set and the first film will be indoors. She also reported that she is continuing to work with the manager from DeAnza. Review of proposed special events banner and selection of final color, size, and mounting hardware. (Sievert, Beard) Sievert reported that she had not yet received a scaleable City logo. She stated that she would like to have the logo before continuing with further designs. Off presented a demonstration using different sizes of pvc pipes and a patio umbrella stand to show how the banner could be supported. He stated that the hardware would be inexpensive and that the stand would be easy to assemble and store. Report from the ad hoc committee regarding the creation of hands-on art experiences for children. (pai-Brizendine, Young) Young reported that the ad hoc committee was not able to meet before the meeting and will report back at the next meeting. COMMISSIONER AND LIAISON REPORTS A. Review of the committee roster. The roster will be updated to reflect the Distinguished Artist of the Year ad hoc committee and the new Cherry Blossom Festival ad hoc committee. Off reported on the mayor's breakfast. He stated that it was decided during the meeting that a new flag should be purchased for Conference Room A as the old one was orange instead of red. He directed the Commission's attention to the new flag in the conference room. Pai- Brizendine will attend the June mayor's breakfast. May 26, 1998 Fine Arts Commission Page 4 9.
