FAC 09-23-97 City of Cupertino FINE ARTS COMMISSION Regular Meeting September 23, 1997 1. CALL TO ORDER At 7:30 p.m. Mary Sievert called the meeting to order in Conference Room A and led the pledge of allegiance. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE 3. ROLL CALL Present: Chairperson Mary Sievert, Vice Chairperson Rita Young, Commissioners Stephen Beard, Robert Lerner (8:15 p.m.), Sheila Mohan, Janet Mohr Absent: Commissioner Marlene Elwell City Staff present: City Clerk Kimberly Smith 4. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Charlene Pai-Brizendine stated that she was attending the meeting to see what goes on at a regular commission meeting and to see how she might be able to participate. Paul Rickey, Jr., KKUP-FM Radio, stated that he was going to Oregon to see art activities in the area and was willing to provide a report to the commission if it was requested. Mr. Rickey also informed the Commission that www.kkup.com/schedule is the new web site address for KKUP-FM. 5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Beard moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of July 22,1997. Young seconded; motion passed with Lerner and Elwell absent. Mohr abstained. 6. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS City Clerk reported that the CD on public art ftom the City of Seattle has arrived and is available for the Commission's use. The Library Commission sent a letter thanking the Fine Arts Commission for the $1,000 grant for the Southeast Asian and California art books and materials as well as a status report on the progress of the project. An announcement regarding Leadership Cupertino was distributed to the Commission. September 23,1997 Fine Arts Commission Page 2 7. NEW BUSINESS A. Update ftom Four Seasons Corner planning committee (F AC members are Stephen Beard, Mary Sievert, and Rita Young; P&R members are Frank Jelinch and Edye Stein). Sievert stated that the committee had been scheduled to meet, but the landscape architect was not selected at that time. City Clerk stated that the Parks and Recreation Director felt the Four Seasons Corner planning committee should meet with the architect and one will be hired shortly. B. Appointment of ad hoc committee to review applications for fine arts grants. Mohr, Mohan and Sievert volunteered to work on the ad hoc committee. 8. OLD BUSINESS A. Update ftom Cultural Arts Event ad hoc committee (F AC members are Marlene Elwell and Sheila Mohan). Continued to October 28 meeting. B. Report on Free Shakespeare in the Park performance of "Much Ado About Nothing" and presentation to Distinguished Artist Sara Loesch-Frank. Young reported that the Distinguished Artist Sara Loesch-Frank received her award in ftont of a large crowd at one of the Shakespeare performances. She also stated that she noticed during the presentation that verbal credit was given to the corporate sponsors, but not to the Fine Arts Commission. City Clerk stated that verbal recognition was given to the City during the first night's performance. Discussion developed regarding which event the distinguished artist award should be presented at and the Commission felt that Shakespeare in the Park was the best event for the presentation. C. Review of proposal ftom Eric Skoverski of Zantix Services regarding content and graphics for promotional flyers, brochures, letterhead, event banners, ad copy, etc. Continued to October 28 meeting. September 23, 1997 Fine Arts Commission Page 3 9. COMMISSIONER AND LIAISON REPORTS Mohan reported on the Library Commission web page project. Application forms are being prepared and will be made available at the library and City Clerk's office. 10. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
