MINUTES
1.
CALL TO ORDER
At 7:36 p.m. Diane Ikeda called the meeting to order in Conference room A and
led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Cornmissioners present: Beard; Ikeda; Lerner (8:00 p.m.); Mohan; Sievert;
Young. Staff members present: City Clerk Kimberly Smith; Recording Secretary
Dorothy Steenfott.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Mohan moved to approved the minutes as amended. Page four, second paragraph
was amended to read "Young said she and Springmeyer will continue to work on
the ad hoc committee. Beard seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Ms. Nejat Fariba from Payvand Cultural School spoke to the commission
regarding the Iranian Arts and Cultural event to be held on Oct. 27 . She showed
a video explaining the activities of the school and submitted a grant application
for funds which would help to pay for their special event. They hope to have a
performance by the A vaz International Dance Theatre. Ikeda suggested that this
item be placed on the agenda for commission review in September.

WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
Material was forwarded by Sandra Beard regarding three design workshops in
Palo Alto to solicit public input regarding improvements to downtown and Lytton
Plaza.
An invitation was received inviting the commissioners to a meeting of the
California Assembly of Local Arts Agencies. The meeting will be held Tuesday,
July 30 from two to four in San Francisco. There is an article in the July
newsletter from CALAA about a collaboration between the Santa Clara County
Arts Council and the San Jose Arts Commission to chart future of arts and culture
in the Silicon Valley

A newspaper clipping regarding vacancy on the Fine Arts Commission was
presented. The deadline for applications is July 26 unless no applications have
been received.
Flyers for the Shakespeare performance in August were distributed.
Commissioners were asked to distribute at their businesses and other community
groups.
The City Clerk reviewed a list of promotional tools being used for Free
Shakespeare in the Park in Cupertino.
The commissioners were reminded that it is time to renew membership in
International Sculpture Center. The cost is $65. Ikeda stated that it is very
worthwhile. City Clerk Smith will process for payment.
Ikeda shared an invitation she received to the Warburton exhibit. Commissioners
were invited to attend if schedules permit.

STAFF REPORTS
Smith reviewed the budget report and stated that there were not any significant
expenditures to report this month.

NEW BUSINESS
A.
Presentation on public art projects by Jerry Allen, City of San Jose
Cultural Affairs.
Jerry Allen, Director of the City of San Jose Cultural Affairs Department,
showed a slide presentation of public art from other cities. He emphasized
the importance of including the community in the process of selecting
public art. Mr. Allen stated that it usually takes approximately three years
to complete a project such as the Heart of the City.
B.
Future special events.
No new special events were discussed.
C.
Status of nominations for Distinguished Artist of the Year.
Ikeda reported that the ad hoc committee had unanimously agreed to
recommend the selection of Brother Joseph Aspell, S.M. He is a painter,
sculptor and interior designer and also teaches art. A number of his works
are available for viewers at the Marianists Center in Cupertino. Lerner
moved to accept the recommendation. Young seconded and the motion
carried unanimously.

Status of student liaison positions.
Discussion was held regarding the positions of student liaison.
Commissioners noted that since they were non-voting members it was
difficult to attract students to the position. Young moved to disband the
student liaison position, Sievert seconded and the motion carried
unanimously.
OLD BUSINESS
A.
Heart ofthe City Project.
Sievert distributed a proposal she prepared regarding art in public places
for the Heart of the City project. She requested that the commission
review the proposal and suggested that it be discussed at the September
meeting. Discussion developed regarding a response to the Mayor's
request regarding the proposed sun dial as the landmark art project for the
corner of Stevens Creek Boulevard and DeAnza Boulevard. The
commission decided to form an ad hoc committee to work on a response to
the Mayor and to City Council. The ad hoc members Young, Sievert, and
Beard will present their proposal to the commission during a special
meeting on September 3.
COMMISSIONER AND LIAISON REPORTS
None.

At 10: 15 p.m., Lerner moved for adjournment. Sievert seconded. Motion carried
unanimously.
