January 6, 2016
MEETING MINUTES
CALL TO ORDER
At 7:32 pm Chair Ho called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall, 10300
Torre Avenue, Cupertino in Conference Room C Cupertino.
ROLL CALL
Commissioners: Jerry Liu, Annie Ho, Rose Grymes, Ann Stevenson
City/County Library Staff: Carol Atwood, Christine Hanel, Nancy Howe,
Gayathri Kanth
Absent: Gopal Kumarappan
Guests: Misty Mersich, Cupertino’s Sustainability Coordinator
1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Liu asked to add title for guest speaker, Michele Huie, Acting
Virtual Services Manager, Commissioner Grymes motioned to approve the
addition to the Minutes for the special meeting on November 10, 2015. Chair
Liu seconded. Motion passed unanimously.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
None
2. REPORTS
Staff Report – Carol Atwood introduced Christine Hanel. She will be taking
over as liaison beginning in February. Carol invited the Commission
to the Sports Center Open house on January 9.
Cupertino Community Librarian Report- Gayathri presented attached report.
County Librarian Report – Nancy Howe presented attached report.
Discussion followed. Commissioner Liu asked about status of the
grant from ESL. Nancy reported that the library is still receiving these
funds.
Friends of the Library Report- Commissioner Ho reported that the last book
sale was very successful.
Cupertino Library Foundation Report-No report submitted.
Commissioner Reports:
Commissioner Liu joined Mayor Chang on the Teen Challenge (flyer
attached).
Chair Ho attended the Mayor’s meeting on January 6, 2016 and
summarized what each commission was working on. Council has
planned a study session on January 12 and the Mayor requested the
Commissions’ community benefits requests. Carol to add a footnote to
the Library Commission presentation to City Council that this will
continue to be discussed in February.
Calendar Review- Commissioner Liu to attend the Mayor’s meeting
in February
NEW BUSINESS
1- Introduction of Misty Mersich, the City’s new Sustainability
Coordinator.
Misty described the organization structure of the sustainability
division and noted that they are currently recruiting for a new
sustainability commission. Discussed the climate action plan
including programs for community choice energy, green
business, safe routes to school and the DeAnza College Green
Certification.
OLD BUSINESS
2- 2015 Work Plan
Carol to send the 2015 Work Plan to the Commission for
preparation of the report to City Council.
3- Poet Laureate Update
A reception will be held at the Senior Center on 1/7/16 for the
outgoing/incoming Poet Laureate starting at 7:00 p.m. The
Commission requested a presentation from the new Poet
Laureate in either March or Apri.
