May 7, 2014
MEETING MINUTES
1. CALL TO ORDER
At 7:02 pm Commissioner Liu called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall,
10300 Torre Avenue, in Conference Room C Cupertino.
2. ROLL CALL
Commissioners: Jerry Liu, Annie Ho, Ann Stevenson, Adrian Kolb

3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Kolb moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of April 2,
2014. Commissioner Stevenson seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
4. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
A. Cupertino Community Librarian Report
Cupertino Librarian Ms. Kanth shared information about an event enjoyed by
ninety hildren and families resented b Chamber Music b the Bay, band

comprised of young adults who frequented the Cupertino and Saratoga
Libraries as teens. She discussed the Children's Planting Party, where children
enjoyed rock painting and planted beans,pumpkins and sunflowers. There
was a Poetry Play with haikus with collages. Another popular program that
took place was the Fusion 3D Printing Program attended by 96 patrons. A
second 3D Printing Program will be offered to outline applications of 3D
printing. The ESL class was attended by 80 patrons.
Upcoming programs are a Mother's Day picture frame craft project, the
Monta Vista Teen Technology Symposium, the Spring 2014 Film Series with
Mark Larson which have 30 to 40 regular attendees. Also upcoming is the
Friends Book Sale.
B. County Librarian Report
Ms. Howe mentioned that on May 16th all Libraries will be closed for Staff
Development Day which takes place every two years. Signs.will be on Library
doors and website. The County Library is in the midst of a budget review with
a status quo budget of$38.5 million. Projected property tax increases
provided enough funds to cover service levels and cover cost increases. The
Summer Reading Program begins June 1St. Ms. Howe discussed the report
"Why Summer Reading Programs Matter" from the California Library
Association which outlines the importance of reading during the summer. This
year the County Library hopes to raise the participation rate of kids who are
library patrons. Outreach about the Summer Reading Program includes
informing teachers, the school district offices, the Cupertino Scene, Cupertino
Courier and the San Jose Mercury News. Block Leaders through Laura Lee
will be notified about the program.
The County Library is providing placemats targeting Senior Library Services
to the Senior Meal Program and meal delivery services. The DIY Energy
Toolkits program has been rolled out in all Library locations.
The Behavior Policy has been reviewed to be clear about the banning process.
New items discussed were E-cigarettes,patrons putting feet on furniture,
patrons with bad odor and sleeping on couches when it blocks others. The
policy wording was reviewed to be consistent and take action if it is disrupting
or disturbing other people. The policy is on the library website.
C. Friends of the Library Report
The Friends of the Library book sale is approaching and volunteers are
needed. Commissioner Kolb will forward any offers to volunteer to the
correct person.
D. Cupertino Library Foundation Report
Cupertino Library Foundation President Eno Sclunidt is traveling.
E. Teen Commission
Teen Commission has invited commissioners to send a representative to
an ice cream social event called Toppings and Topics on May 17 from 11
am— 1 pm at the Cupertino Teen Center. The goal is to invite teens to talk
to members of the Commissions and City Government.
F. CPLA Membership Renewal
It is time to renew the CPLA Membership. The staff will take care of
renewing CPLA membership for the commissioners.

5. RIFPORTS
A. Cupertino Poet Laureate
The Euphrat Museum will host the Cupertino Poet Laureate reading on June 12.
The flyer advertising the event will be completed and posted. It was decided not
to do a third coffee house reading due to planning constraints. A possible project
is an International Poetry Festival potentially in 2015, which would be led by a
steering committee of community leaders. A workshop will be offered called
"Writing Your First Poem"to draw people who would like to learn how to write
poetry. The idea of coding and poetry was brought up which will be discussed at a
later date.
B. Commissioner Report
Commissioner Stevenson thanked Ms. Kanth for the Library Staff's efforts for
the Volunteer Reception. She shared that she is meeting with Friends of the
Library, the Foundation and Cupertino Library to work on plans for the
Anniversary Celebration. They are planning to use the Dewey Decimal system
and designing activities and community involvement to go with numbers.
Commissioner Ho thanked the Santa Clara County Library and the Cupertino
Library for the volunteer event. She talked about the Sustainability Work Plan
and four planned events. She discussed flyers for Growing Greener and Block
Leaders. There were approximately 50 or 60 children at the toddler program
which had a speaker and juggler. There are three more programs scheduled for
June, July and September. Flyers for the event are at City Hall. Commissioner
Ho attended the meeting regarding the Library expansion. The design
company proposed four sets of plans. Everyone voted for the largest proposed
option, where the story room could be expanded to seat100 people
C. Staff Report

6. OLD BUSINESS
A. Cupertinolibrary.org website
Commissioner Liu showed the new website design. He proposed that the
mobile-friendly site include more Cupertino focused presence, is
maintenance free and help drive traffic to the County Library website. The
plan is not to host the site but have it be a portal to direct traffic to other
sites—County Library website, Cupertino Foundation, Friends of the
Library and the City of Cupertino. After getting the Google Analytics
Tracking Code from Ms. Mathur, then visitor data can be tracked.
Ms. Kanth reconunended adding a link for Cupertino Library history,
similar to the County Library page. Commissioner Liu requested that
people email him additional comments about the proposed website design.
B. Adopt 2014 Commission Work Plan
Commissioner Liu proposed that the Work Plan adoption be postponed to
next meeting when Commissioner Grymes is in attendance.
7. NEW BUSINESS
A. Library Patron Survey
Discuss performing a Cupertino Library Patron Survey to determine what
patrons like about the Cupertino Library services. Commissioner Liu
wants to have youth provide responses separate from adults. Ms. Kanth
raised the idea to provide the survey at the 10"'Anniversary Celebration
where 3,000 are expected in attendance and offered to provide
Commissioner Liu a copy of the survey Saratoga Library performed. Also
mentioned was the possibility of providing incentives or a raffle to patrons
who respond to the survey. The Commission could design the survey. A
poster can be provided for kids where they can draw or write what they
like about the Cupertino Library. An idea about a raffle item is to be
Librarian of the Day.
