FAC 07-22-03CiT~ Oi: CUPFI INO APPROVED MINUTES FINE ARTS COMMISSION Regular Meeting July 22, 2003 CALLTO ORDER At 7:35~.m., Chairperson Shirley Lin-Kinoshita called the meeting to order in the City Manager's Office, 10300 Torre Avenue, and led the Pledge of Allegiance. ROLLCALL Present: Chairperson Shirley Lin-Kinoshita, Commissioners Nancy Canter, Carl Orr, Hema Kundargi, and Rita Young (7:40 p.m.). Commissioners absent: David Kim and Janet Mohr. Staff present: City Clerk Kimberly Smith. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Minutes of the regular meeting of June 24, 2003. Nancy Canter corrected the spelling of her name in the minutes, and Canter/Kundargi moved to approve the minutes as corrected. The motion carded with Commissioners Kim and Mohr absent. PRESENTATIONS - None ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - None WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS The City Clerk distributed additional news articles that had not been included in the backup materials. The Commissioners noted that two reporters have shown interest in doing follow-up stories on the Distinguished Artist of the Year and the process to select that honoree, as well as the sculpture "Perspectives" which was commissioned for the comer to Stevens Creek and DeAnza Boulevards. The City Clerk noted that photographs had been provided by Extended Stay America Hotels showing the type of art that they propose to place at their new location in Cupertino. The commissioners asked that this item be put on the next agenda for discussion. COMMISSIONER AND LIAISON REPORTS Monthly meeting with Mayor Chang (3ra Tuesday at 5 p.m.) · July and August meetings have been cancelled. · Shirley Lin-Kinoshita will attend September meeting July 22, 2003 Cupertino Fine Arts Commission Page 2 NEW BUSINESS Distinguished Artist of the Year award (Kundargi, Orr, Young) · Confirm award date, location, and presenter (Lin-Kinoshita · Feasibility of arranging for an exhibition 4. Consider cancellation of August 26 meeting (week prior to Memorial Day weekend)\ The commissioners concurred to cancel this meeting. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 5. Consider amendments to Guidelines for Selecting Public Art Nancy Canter reviewed her recommended changes and additions, and the commission offered further suggestions. The City Clerk will incorporate all of those and provide the commission with a second draft at the September meeting. The commissioners also asked to see a copy of the contract with the artist Roger Berry, to confirm that copyright and other issues had been addressed. The commissioners asked that the next agenda also include discussion of creating a public art catalogue and development of a walking tour to include DeAnza College, the Senior Center, and the public art throughout the city. Art and Wine Festival of July 19-20. · Analysis of outreach and ideas for next time The commissioners shared their experiences from the event, and agreed that it was a great public outreach opportunity, and they wished to participate again in 2004. Carl Orr noted that there was a very positive response to the "Perspectives" maquette from a representative of the Verona Apartments, who was collecting information for future residents. Comments regarding plans for next year included: · A large "Fine Arts Commission" sign on the booth is needed because there were too many city logos around, so the banner alone was not sufficient. · Paperweights needed. · "Party favors" (colorful necklaces) were a good draw for children, who brought over their parents. · If the weather is very hot, consider spray bottles/portable battery fans. · 400 flyers each will be sufficient. · Consider gift bags because people didn't want to take too many flyers. STAFF REPORTS Status report on City Center Park project and sculpture "Perspectives" by Roger Berry · Report on bid opening and award The City Clerk reported that the bids had been opened and the project would be awarded on August 4, 2003.
