PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
At 7:02 p.m., Chair Rajeswari Mahalingam called the meeting to order in Conference
Room C, 10300 Torre Avenue, Cupertino, California, and led the Pledge of Allegiance.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairperson Rajeswari Mahalingam, Vice Chair Russell Leong and
Commissioners Jessi Kaur, Michael Sanchez, Absent: KC Chandratreya.
STAFF REPORT
1. Piu was contacted by a member of the Teen. Commission. The Teen Commission is
interested in promoting the arts for youth and would like to attend a future Fine
Arts Commission meeting to explore avenues to collaborate in. This may be a Work
Program item.
2. Interviews for Fine Arts Commission have been done and KC's replacement will be
announced soon and attend the next regular meeting.
3. Typically, the chair and vice -chair of the commission is chosen at the first meeting of
the year. Since this item is not agendized, the Fine. Arts Commission can hold a
special meeting in February.
4. The mission and purpose of the Fine Arts Commission from the Cupertino
Municipal Code was reviewed.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
1. Diana Argabright attended the meeting to invite the Fine Arts Commission to the
Winter 2014 exhibit at the Euphrat Museum entitled Deep Reading which looks at
the intersection of humanity and technology and traditional practices in the digital
age. Exhibit hours are February 3rd to March 20'h, 2014, Monday through Thursday,
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The reception is Wednesday, February 19th, 2014, 5:30 -7:30
p.m. at the Euphrat Museum. Many other special events are planned in association
with this exhibit, including an Artists' Books Workshop on Saturday, March 1s, from
10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

1. Minutes of the regular adjourned meeting of November 25, 2013.
Mahalingam and Leong moved and seconded to approve the minutes as corrected.
The motion carried 4 -0 -1 (Chandratreya absent).
2. 2014 Work Program
The City Council does an annual work program that includes Commission goals and
objectives. This year the Commissions are being asked to provide input into the
Council Work Program sessions.
The following ideas were discussed:
• Update Public Art Handbook: Review and establish better defined guidelines for
the Public Art Program
• Review of grant materials
• Review and update guidelines for ranking /rating the Distinguished and
Emerging Artist Program; develop strategies to increase outreach to increase
interest and applications for the Distinguished Artist /Emerging Artist Program -
Engage community in the arts, possibly with Parks & Recreation and Teen
Commissions
• Collaborate on a summer theater youth workshop or camp with San Francisco
Shakespeare in the Park
• Explore the concept of a Cupertino Idol Competition with Rotary Club and other
arts competitions
• Continue to develop Phase 3 of the Art Catalog. Maybe add a link to the City's
website and also request a budget allocation for printing the Art Catalog to
potentially gift to visiting dignitaries and sister -city visitors
• Reviewing upcoming public art in private development, e.g., Apple, Main Street
• Consider organizing a Flash Mob at a local event
• Collaborate with merchants at Vallco Mall for a performing arts show before the
holidays
• Develop a list of clubs, organizations, festivals, businesses and area art programs
for the commission to collaborate with
3. Distinguished Artist /Emerging Artist Program
2014 marketing material should be updated and ready to distribute by March.
Specific edits were discussed. Suggestions for revising the press release to define
visual and performing arts, including past winners and disciplines. Russell and

Michael will be revising the materials by the next meeting. Specific guidelines will
be defined for clarity for applicants and commissioners.
Discussion will be continued to next meeting to identify marketing opportunities.
COMMISSIONER REPORTS
4. Chair's report regarding the 2013 Annual Report presentation to City Council.
Mahalingam reported that the Council received the presentation well and had many
questions about the Art Catalog in particular. Questions were asked about the cost
of printing the Art Catalog.
ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m. to a special meeting on February 24th, 2014 at
City Hall at 7:00 p.m.
