MEETING MINUTES
1. CALL TO ORDER
At 7:02 pm Commissioner Grymes called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall,
10300 Torre Avenue, in Conference Room B, Cupertino.
2. ROLL CALL
Commissioners: Jerry Liu, Annie Ho, Rose Grymes, Adrian Kolb, Ann Stevenson,
City /County Library Staff: Cynthia Wilson, Carol Frost, Nidhi Mathur

3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Liu moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of October 2,
2013 as revised. Commissioner Ho seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
4. PRESENTATION
Kathy Stakey from Friends of the Library reported the Friends contributed $20,000 to
the Measure A campaign. Other contributions include the Bookmobile $10,000 annual
contribution, $15,000 to the Best Seller Collection, $10,000 to the DVD collection and
$5,000 to the Silicon Valley Reads program. The Friends also contribute to the
Summer Reading Program for the Teens and the. Children. This year the Friends
purchased backpacks as a reward for the Reading program Teen participants. They
also support the Children's, Adult, Chinese, Tween, and Teen Book Clubs.
Funds for these contributions are obtained through continuing lobby sales which
brings in $2,200 -2,600 a month. Book sales are another form of revenue, as well as
internet sales that produces $800 -2000 a month. They also have mini Courtyard Sales
which brings in revenue.
The Friends will also donate Poinsettia's for display at the Library.
Library Commission would like to work: with the Friends of the Library as part of their
Technology Plan, erhaps working together in regards to the Tech Tool Bar. Kathy
suggested bringing it up at one of the Book Club meetings about reading digitally.
Kathy discussed the importance of having the Cupertino Courier digitalized instead of
the out dated microfiche process.
5. NEW BUSINESS
A. Welcome Gayathri Kanth, Cupertino Librarian
Ms. Kanth gave a brief background on herself.
B. Welcome Jennifer Swanton Brown, Cupertino Poet Laureate
Ms. Swanton Brown gave a brief background on herself and talked about how she
became involved with the Poet Laureate f)rogram. She discussed her future plans as
Poet Laureate which included a suggestion box and starting a blog, possibly on the
City website. Significant discussion was held among the group regarding the different
programs and organizations that would be available to the Poet Laureate as well as
general ideas of projects that she would like to develop.
6. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
A. Cupertino Community Librarian Report
In Cupertino 66% of the residents have Library cards. 76,156 visitors came to the
library with 123 new visitors. 223,063 total circulation. The total number of programs
attended in August 2013 was 49. The expansion of the story room was discussed with
a target goal being 100 in capacity. Library attendance had 673 adults and 731 school
age children. A total of 2,138 children, 722 teens, and 352 adults took part in our
annual summer reading program for all ages. These totals showed an increase of 35%
for children, 66 % for teens, and 177% o fo;r adults over last year's totals. A database
card for teachers has been developed and is now available. This card is issued to a
teacher or school librarian at an eligible school in the Santa Clara County Library
District for the purpose of demonstrating Library databases to students. 223 children
have signed up for Book of the Month Club. The library had the first installment of
the Fall Performing Arts and Culture Series, sponsored by the Cupertino Library
Foundation. The Library is having a Harry Potter Book Cover Design Contest:
Another program mentioned was The Best Films Ever Made on Earth Part I with
Mark Larson of De Anza College.
B. County Librarian Report
The administrative offices will be moving to 1370 Dell Ave. in Campbell. They will
be hosting an Open House on Dec. 6 from '3:00-5: OOpm. Saturday Feb. l s` will be the
Friends and Commissioners Friends Endowment Forum. The next Santa Clara
County Library District Joint Powers Authority (JPA) meeting will be Thursday,
October 24 at 1:30 pm. The agenda will include an end -of- year financial report for
fiscal year ending June 30, 2013, election of 2014 JPA officers, and presentation of
the ten year Capital Improvement Plan.
The 2014 Friends, Commissioners, Foundation and Endowment members Forum will
be held on Saturday, February 1, 9 am - Noon.
Mid - October, The Library will start offering TreeHouse, an online, interactive
technology coursework series which will be free to patrons. The Courses range from
Programming and Coding to Web Design and Small Business Development.
Refreshed and updated continuously with the latest in web technology, the program
boasts over 1,000 video courses. By utilizing TreeHouse curriculum, students have an
opportunity to develop skills currently in demand. Skills such as building iPhone or
Android apps or developing creative and interactive websites provide useful assets to
course participants, allowing them to become more competitive in job searches and
potentially increasing chances for successful job placement. The step -by -step video
courses and training exercises are curriculum -based and allow patrons to start at the
beginning of a course (like "Building aii iPad App ") and progress at their own pace.
The 2013 Summer Reading Program offered at all libraries for all ages, ended with
12,853 participants, an increase of 67% over summer 2012.
Gayathri Kanth is the new Community Librarian of the Cupertino Library. Jane
Cronkite will become Community Librarian at Campbell. Recruitment for the
Community Librarian positions for Saratoga and Los Altos are underway.

Commissioners Grymes and Liu had a discussion with Megan and will
be followed up with another discussion on technology related
initiatives.

2. Mayors Meeting
Commissioner Liu attended the Mayors meeting with representatives
from the TICC, Bicycle Pedestrian, Planning and Parks and Rec.
Commissions. TICC reported on the services and availability for
KMVT and to contact Shelly Wolfe if interested. The BPC discussed
their Fall Festival attendance; they had 40 kids have their bikes
reviewed. They are working with the Friends of Stevens Creek trail to
encourage more bicycling. They are also working on a set of
Pedestrian Guidelines. Planning department reported on Apple. Parks
and Rec. is looking at some of the Master Plans and long term
projects.
3. City Council
Ms. Mathur brought up that it was previously discussed that the
Commission would attend a November City Council meeting. It was
discussed which date would be optimal.
C. Staff Report

Ms. Mathur will follow up on the status of the parking structure.
