July 3., 2013
MEETING MINUTES
1. CALL TO ORDER
At 7:02 pm Commissioner Kolb called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall,
10300 Torre Avenue, in Conference Room B, Cupertino.
2. ROLL CALL
Commissioners: Jerry Liu, Annie Ho, Adrian Kolb, Rose Grymes
City /County Library Staff. Mark Fink, Nancy Howe, Nidhi Mathur
Absent: Ann Stevenson
Guest: Eno Schmidt
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Grymes moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of June
5, 2013. Commissioner Kolb seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
4. PRESENTATION
Eno Schmidt, President Cupertino Library Foundation presented on how to keep the
dialog going between Commission and the Foundation now and in the future. He
shared being at the Campbell Library on May 13 at 5:30 pm for a campaign for Save
Our Libraries 2013. He discussed the convenient way to get the word out about
Measure A in the form of a working; meeting and reported the following areas of
focus for the Library Foundation. Silicon Valley Stories- partnered with Santa Clara
Valley History Collaborative featuring; the California Western Americana Collection.
CreaTv filmed 17 participants who described their personal stories. More information

He also discussed 3D Printer - a presentation given by the Tech Shop. There is a
possible spring series in 2014 to be hosted using 3D printing as the topic.
Discussed ongoing projects such as the Foundation and SC.CLD (Santa Clara County
Library District) partnership with the Cupertino Union School District for the S3 —
Super Science Searches academic year and summer contest. About 170 students have
registered for the contest. SCCLD formally launched at Cupertino Library on May 3,
2013 the Tech Toolbar. He also shared about the approved funding request to support
the Poet Laureate program.
5. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
A. Cupertino Community Librarian Report
Cupertino Librarian, Mark Fin]-,-, said that the library numbers are still very
strong and will continue. He reported on the Summer Science Series, where
200 tickets were given away for the inflatable planetarium. He also reported
on the 3D printer series where 216 people attended. Mark reported on all
children and adult summer reading programs.
B. County Librarian Report
Reported the importance of Measure A- provided funds to library operations.

F. Calendar Review
Commissioner Liu attended June Mayor's meeting. Commissioner Kolb is
scheduled to attend the August Mayor's meeting.
6. REPORTS
A. Cupertino Poet Laureate
Commissioner Kolb reported that three people are "going to" apply.
Applications due by July 26th, Interviews are scheduled in the beginning of
August. September 4th is when Library Commission will give approval for
selected candidate. The selection committee will ask for City Council
approval on September 17th Council meeting. During Oct. 1 Council meeting
ceremonial aspect with occur and the new Poet Laureate will be introduced to
the council and there will be farewell to Dave Denny.
B. Commission Report
1. Mayors Meeting
Commissioner Liu reported that TICC is working on a Technology workshop.
Public Safety commission discussed PulsePoint App. Fine Arts Commission
is making a brochure with all the local art around Cupertino. Commissioner
Liu gave update at Mayors meeting on Library Commission's Work Plan.
2. City Council
No report.
C. Staff Report
None
7. OLD BUSINESS
A. 2013 Work Plan
Commissioner Ho reported that she is trying to connect with Erin Cooke about
Speaker Series.
Commissioner Liu discussed other ways to find materials in the library's
databases of distributed materials. Discussed Megan Wong possibly coming
and discussing what the features are for online searching features of library.
Discussed the Tech Toolbar. Discussed briefly 3D printing.
Facilities Access- renovation of story room $500,000 have been approved by
the City Council.
B. Possible Commission Half -Daffy `Retreat'
The Foundation will be having a half day retreat. (Sept 7th) Library
Commission has tabled the half day retreat until a further need arises.
8. NEW BUSINESS
A Parking Garage and other Library Access issues for 2013 -2014
City Council has approved funding for researching the possibility of a new parking
structure. Nidhi to research parking garage structure further and report back to
commission. Nidhi to speak with Timm Borden, Public Works Director and possibly
presentation to the Library Commission
9. AGENDA BUILDING
Public Works will be invited to come to discuss parking structure.
Discussed if Megan would be available to come and discuss "Searching" on
the library's catalog. August 6th City Council meeting was cancelled.
Discussed if anyone on the commission would be interested in judging the
CLF's Summer Super Science Searches contest in August.
