MEETING MINUTES
1. CALL To ORDER
At '7:01 p.m, Commissioner Grymes called the meeting to order at Cupertino City
Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue, Conference Roam B, Cupertino.
2. ROLL CALL
Commissioners: Jerry Liu, Ann Stevenson, Rose Grymes, Annie Ho, Adrian Kolb
City/County Library Staff: Mark Fink, fancy Howe, Nidhi Mathur

3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Liu moved to approve the minutes of the regular .meeting of March 5,
2013. Commissioner Ho seconded and the notion passed unanimously.

5. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
A. County Librarian Report
The next Joint Powers Authority meeting is scheduled on Thursday, April 25,
at 1: 3 0 pm. The agenda includes action on the recommendation of the
Elections Committee to place on the mail ballot, renewal of the existing
special tax rate at no increase and the formation of a new Community
Facilities District. The tax has been in place for nearly twenty years and
accounts for over 17% of total library revenue. The proposed budget for
Fiscal Year 2013 -2014 will be presented at the meeting. The new Santa Clara
County Library District video with footage from all locations and the
bookmobile is available for view on library's Faebook page. It is less than 3
minutes and is a good way to share the library story with the City Council or
at a group meeting. Commissioners Grymes suggested visiting PAC website
like everyiibrry.org which provide advice and provide supporting
information on ballot measure.
B. Cupertino Community Librarian Report
Cupertino Librarian reported in February 2013 more than 211,000 items were
borrowed from Cupertino. There were 66 library programs attended by 2,993
and 11-60 volunteer hours were posted. There was a staged reacting of Black
Home attended by many local celebrities; this event was attended by sixty
participants. Carol Firenze, author of The Passionate Olive: 101 Things to coo
With Olive Oil presented an event and spoke about the virtues of olive oil.
Mark presented the Green Teem Project update. Library extended the library
card drive at Fremont High School, and the staff issued 25 new library cards and
provided students with 'Information about the Library District's extensive print
and digital resources. Theme was a successful library card drive at Lawson Middle
School where library issued 43 cards for students and to library cards for
Lawson. teachers. Library will have a booth at Earth Day festival showcasing
PlaneTree and other programs. The Silicon valley Stories Video History
Project is gathering the memories and personal stories of local residents n
their families on Sunday April 7 at Quinlan Community Center. The goal of
this project is to bring the past to life. The filming of the interviews will last
20 minutes for each session. Mark invited the commissioners to get
interviewed for this project. Cupertino Courier is publishing the front page
story about Plane Tree.
C. Friends of the Library .deport
Kathy Stakey submitted Friends of the Library report.
I. Cupertino Library Foundation Report
Eno Schmidt submitted Library Foundation report. Inviting Cupertino Library
Foundation, for a formal presentation to the commission in a future meeting
was discussed.

REPORTS
A. Cupertino Poet Laureate
Commissioner Kolb reported that Monday April I was the official lush of
Poet Laureate search marketing campaign. Dave Denny is teaching poetry
class on April 14 at Communit 'Hall and the invitation was sent out for the
event. April is the national poetry month.
B. Commission Report
Commissioner Liu .reported on April 2 "a Mayors meeting. The parking issue
and the potential of library commissioners taking parking as one of their
initiative for 2013 work plan were discussed. Commissioner Liu stated the
extra WIFI points at the library are appreciated and the Tech Tool Bar launch
is closely watched by the mayor. Commissioner Ho reported she is interested
in Tech Tool Barr launch and wants to shame that information with Block
Leaders. Commissioner Stevenson reported on CPLA workshop and on the
librarian Anapurna Dandu presentation of electronic resources to the
Chamber. Commissioner Grymes reported on green and sustainable initiative
of commission by setting of Dropbox and uploading the meeting documents to
it. She also reported on The Tech tool bar being the initiative of the Library
Foundation and the Santa Clara County. Bev Lenih n is working on the
marketing of Tech Tool Bar.

The next presentation is schooled in May 7
F. Staff Report
City Council Budget Study session is scheduled on May 22 and May 23. Barth
Day is coning Saturday. Cherry Blossom festival is corning up on April 2
28 and Cupertino Day at Blackberry Farm is scheduled on May 4. The
CREST award results will be published shortly and the award ceremony is
scheduled on May 20. The city launched a Whone app called Frees 95014
which highlights Cupertino trees and the app can be downloaded at
cupertino.org/trees95014.
7. [LLD BUSINESS
A. 2013 Work Plan
Commissioner Kolb suggested to add a category of facilities to the work plan.
Commissioner Liu suggested his participation and engagement towards library
e- resources. He wants to focus on searching for e -boots and librarian curated
content. He is also interested in outreach and advocacy of e- resources.
rymes suggested approaching library advocacy to new audiences by
supporting each other as well as getting the support from the library.
Commissioner Stevenson suggested that Library commissioners can serve as
community lints to various local organizations and help the library staff in
marketing their program . Commissioner Ho suggested outreaching library
services and programs to Bloch Leaders and Cupertino Rotary. Commissioner
xrymes reported that Foundation is working on published digital e- boobs and
suggested working with CALIFA or Amazon. Poet Laureate is an ongoing
program that Library commission is committed to. For the sustainabilit
speaker's series, Cupertino staff is looking for the level of commitment and
support from the library commissioners. Commissioners Grymes will work on
first draft of the Work Plan.
B. Possible Room Exchange with TIC
TICC Commission has decided not to exchange rooms with Library
Commission.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Update Library Commissioner Photo
The new commission photo will be scheduled for few minutes before May
meeting.
B. Possible Commission Half-Day `Retreat'
Possible commission half day retreat was postponed for discussion in future
meeting.
