LIB 06-05-2013City of Cupertino Library Commission Regular Mecting June 5, 2013 MEETING MINUTES CALL To ORDER At 7:02 p.m. Cormissioner Grymes called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue, in Conference Room B, Cupertino. 2, ROLL CALL Commissioners: Jerry Liu, Aran Stevenson, Annie Inc, Adrian Kolb, Rose Grymes City /County Library Staff: Mark Fink, Nancy Howe, l idhi Mathur Absent: None Visitor: Dolly Sandoval 3, APPROVAL of MINUTES Commissioner Kolb moved to approve the minutes- of the regular meeting of May 1, 2013. Commissioner Ho seconded and the motion passed unanimously. 4. PRESENTATION Library Campaign Co- Chair, Kelly Sandoval, presented on the Library Parcel Tax Renewal, Measure A. This measure will be on mail -in ballot for Cupertino residents in 8 weeps. She said the campaign is hoping voters will vote affirmatively to renew this important parcel tax. Steve Tate and lolly Sandoval are Co- Chairing the campaign for this measure. She communicated 2/3 or % of votes are needed to pass this measure. The tax is $33.66 a year for residential people. Monies provide 18% of funding for library. The measure is asking for 20 year extension. She reported that campaign is providing fundraising and awareness information for this measure. She said this measure will be requiring the Library Foundation and Friends of Cupertino Library financial support. She communicated the campaign is looking for location to host phone bank, as well as a Cupertino Captain to head the operation. Cupertino Community Librarian Report 4000 plus people attended programs in addition•, through outreach. another 1500 people attended various library events. The Cupertino Library Matt Lorenzo Librarian) and the Monta vista High School Technology Student Association hosted their Spring 2013 Technology Symposium on May 17, 2013 at the' Cupertino Community Mall. Over 320 patrons attended this event. Energizer station for Bile to work Day had over 100 people that came to the booth. Library has new vendor for Zvi -Fi with positive results. Many new programs will be offered through the next few months. He asked commissioners to sign up for Summer Reading program. B. County Librarian Report On May 2 8, 2013, after a public hearing, the County Library Joint dowers Authority (JPA) Board, unanimously voted to proceed with an August 2013 B. County Librarian Report On May 28, 2013, after a public hearing, the County Library Joint Powers Authority (JPA) Board, unanimously voted to proceed with an August 201 nailed ballot to renew the existing special tax that provides 18% of total District revenue; FAQ's are updated fact sheets are at libraries. Dote that .August 12 1n is the last day to register to vote for this election on Measure A. All library locations have voter registration forms. The next JPA. meeting will be on June 6 1h. Commission Report Commissioner Liu reported on May commissioner meeting. I. Mayors Meeting Commissioner Rose Grymes to attend July 2 meeting Commissioner Adrian Kolb to attend August 6 meeting 2. City Council Commissioner Annie Ho to attend June I I City Council meeting C. Staff Report Apple Draft Environmental Impact Report project is scheduled for a June release, with a 4 5 -day comment period. All comments in this period will be responded to in final Environmental Impact Report. 7. OLD BUSINESS A. 2013 Work Plan Minor changes and edits were made on the 2013 work flan document removed the word Community from the Cupertino Library in Section I. Added Jane Crofflchitename.. Some statements were left as broad ideas. Slight changes to the wording of Section Iv. The commissioners discussed how the Library Commission Work Plan fits in with the City Council Work Plan. Nid.hi to send a copy of City Council Work Plan to the commissioners. Commissioner Kolb made a motion to approve the 2013 Work Plan as amended. Ann Stevenson seconded. vote -o. Commissioner Jerry Liu is to become involved with the Tech Toolbar. Commissioner Adrian Kolb and Commissioner Ann Stevenson to continue working on the Poet Laureate project culminating in September with recommendation to the City Council for the new Poet Laureate. Commissioner .Annie Ho is interested in becoming involved with the City of Cupertino Sust in bility Manager and the Cupertino Community Librarian, initiation of a Sustainability Speakers Series. She will continue her outreach efforts with Rotary. Mark to be a contact for Tech Toolbar. Librarian Mark Fink is reworking staff covering the Tech Toolbar, and reported people have been more interested since the display has been moved the Library Lobby. There is possible staff training on Tech Toolbar on Wednesday June 19t ". Commissioner Adrimi Kolb will work towards outreach of elementary schools but is postponing till fall. Any. Stevenson and Rose Grymes will preset the Library Commission initiatives to other commissions. B. Environment Speakers Series Arnie Ho would life to work the events relating to the Environmental Speaker Series. C. Possible Commission Half-Day 'Retreat' Possible topics - The Work Plan.
