P&R 06-06-13 APPROVED MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION CITY OF CUPERTINO Regular Meeting June 6, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. Community Hall, 10350 Torre Avenue, Cupertino, CA Note: This meeting will be televised 1. CALL TO ORDER Chairperson David Fung called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. in the Community Hall Council Chamber, 10350 Torre Avenue, Cupertino, CA. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE 3. ROLL CALL Commissioners present: David Fung, David Greenstein, Geoff Paulsen Commissioners absent: Siva Budaraju, Darcy Paul Staff present: Carol Atwood, Donna Henriques, Colleen Ferris, Don McCarthy 4. MISCELLANEOUS —NO ACTION REQUIRED A. Staff oral reports Ms. Atwood reported that unfortunately, the Mary Avenue Dog Park campaign, "Bark for your Park", did not receive enough votes to qualify for the finals to win the $100,000 grant. She also reported that next week, is a full week of In-Service training for all part-time summer employees hired by Parks and Recreation. She thanked the Courier Community Newspaper for running a nice article on the Senior Center softball team and said the number of players increased from 8 to 21, after the article. The team has 1 officially named themselves the "Geese-ers" and their t-shirts will have Canada geese on the front. She said to please contact the Senior Center if anyone is interested in joining the team. Ms. Atwood said the City Council decided not to build a second bathroom at the new Environmental Education Building at McClellan Ranch Park Preserve primarily, because the project is not out for bid yet so they are moving forward with the original design. Ms. Atwood said the 4th of July festivities will again be taking place this year. The barbecue for Cupertino residents will be from 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m. at Blackberry Farm Park. Tickets will be $5.00 per person and will only be sold at Blackberry Farm beginning on June 27. Cinema at Sundown will be on Thursday evenings at 8:30 p.m. beginning on July 18, then at Blackberry Farm on Friday evenings at 8:30 p.m. at Memorial Park, beginning on August 9. Shakespeare in the Park will present Macbeth this summer, also at Memorial Park and begins on July 20, at 7:30 p.m. The Summer Concert Series begins tonight, June 6, at Memorial Park and will continue on Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:00 p.m. B. Commissioner contacts Commissioner Greenstein reported that he and Commissioner Paulsen attended The Meadows neighbors' meeting that was organized by Katy Jensen and Public Works staff, to inform the residents about the Stevens Creek Trail going through the Stocklmeir property. The neighbors who attended were very excited that the trail will finally be completed and believe this to be an amenity to their community. Commissioner Paulsen said staff did a great job presenting the project and the neighbors' comments were very enthusiastic and they were unanimous with their support. He said before the meeting with the neighbors, he was invited to attend an informational meeting where the City's Naturalist, Barbara Banfield and professional botanists discussed the meadow itself and what: species of grass and wild thistles grow there. This group may work with the Water District on a plan to 2 rid the area of all the thistles and plant more native plants and trees to help restore the area. Commissioner Fung reported that he attended the monthly Mayor's meeting with the other Commission's Chairs and said the various Chairs reported on what current projects the Commissions are working on. Commissioner Paulsen reported that he is now on the board of the Friends of Stevens Creek Trail and they are working on a website that will have geographical information layers about the Trail. He also attended a Volunteer Fair with the Friends group at Microsoft in Mountain View and said that most of the people were in favor of the Trail proposals but that some expressed their concerns. There is currently a Task Force providing work for the Four Cities group on policies regarding the Trail and they are looking for an additional member from each city. They meet in the evening of the first Thursday of each month. 5. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING A. Regular meeting of May 2, 2013 Action: Commissioner Paulsen made a motion to approve the minutes and Commissioner Greenstein seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously. 6. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - None 7. NEW BUSINESS A. Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society update by Executive Director, Bob Power Bob Power, Executive Director, gave a presentation and said the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society's (SCVAS) mission statement is basically, "Save the Birds". SCVAS has been serving the local community for 88 years. They offer continuing environmental education called "Wetlands Discovery Program", to Title I schools and SCVAS pays all costs. Their main public event each year is the "Wildlife Education Day" and this year it will be on October 26, at McClellan Ranch Park Preserve. 3 B. Sports Center Operations update by Recreation Coordinator, Colleen Ferris Interim Director, Carol Atwood, introduced Colleen Ferris, who gave an overview of all the offerings at the Cupertino Sports Center. They offer a full fitness center, a childcare center, a multi- purpose room with a half-court basketball court, table tennis, badminton, and volleyball. They also offer a wide variety of fitness classes 7 days per week, 2 racquetball courts, a Teen Center, and 17 outdoor tennis courts. In addition, tennis instruction, by Lifetime Tennis, is available for children from age 4 up to adult. They also offer table tennis and badminton summer camps for children and the camps are now open for registration. The Sports Center offers a wide variety of memberships and they range from individual, couple, or family, on a daily, monthly or yearly basis. There are also annual memberships available for seniors (over age 62) and juniors (age 17 & younger). Currently, there is a 3-month special fitness membership available for $99.00. Colleen reported that on January 10, 2004, there were 900 members at the Sports Center and today there are over 1900 members. Commissioner Greenstein asked if Colleen had figures regarding how many Cupertino residents are members versus how many non-residents are members. Colleen said she would email staff and the Commissioners with that information. C. Reschedule July 4, 2013 Commission meeting Due to the next Commission meeting falling on the 4th of July, staff recommended cancelling the meeting and rescheduling to a special meeting to discuss the Commission's work plan for FY 2013-2014. The Commissioners decided on July 24, at 6:00 p.m. and staff will find a venue to hold the meeting. If a venue is not available for that date, the Commissioners chose July 22, as an alternate date. 8.
