Regular Meeting
FEBRUARY 6, 2013 MINUTES
1.CALL TO ORDER
At 6:59 p.m. Commissioner Kolb called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall,
10300 Torre Avenue, EOC, Cupertino.
2.A. ROLL CALL
Commissioners: Jerry Liu, Ann Stevenson, Adrian Kolb, Annie Hoe
City/County Library Staff: Mark Fink, Nancy Howe, Nidhi Mathur
Absent: Rose Grymes
B. Welcome New Commissioners
Commissioner Kolb welcomed new commissioners Annie Ho and Jerry Liu and the
new commissioners introduced themselves to the commission.
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Kolb moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of January
9, 2012. Commissioner Liu seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
4. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
None
5. OLD BUSINESS
A. Teen Advisory Board Presentation
Matt Lorenzo, Teen Librarian introduced members of the Teen Advisory
Board who presented on the Library Community Garden courtyard project. A
second group of teens gave a presentation on various teen databases and
online resources available at the library for local teen patrons and teachers.
B. Poet Laureate selection committee
The selection committee is formed and has five core members. The members
are represented from Friends, Foundation, Library Commission and De Anza
College, Dave Denny and Bev Lenihan are contributing as consultants.
C. Mayor’s meeting
Commissioner Kolb reported on February 5 Mayor’s meeting.
Commissioner Ho will attend March 5 Mayor’s meeting
D. Commission City Council presentation
Dave Denny, Cupertino Poet Laureate will give an update to City Council on
February 19. Library update to City Council on February 19 will be given by
Ann Stevenson, and Adrian Kolb.
6. REPORTS
A. Cupertino Community Librarian Report
Cupertino Librarian Mark Fink reported that Mayor Orrin Mahoney showed
love for Cupertino Library during his State of the City speech. He reported an
increase of about 9% in library visitation and 2.2% in circulation compared to
December last year. Around 3,000 people attended Library programs.
As part
of Silicon Valley Reads 2013, the South Bay Blue Star Moms and the Cupertino
Library patrons can donate items for care packages to be sent to soldiers on active
duty. In conjunction with Silicon Valley Reads 2013, the Cupertino Library
Foundation is sponsoring an essay contest for Cupertino adults and teens. Patrons
e-reader questions can be answered by scheduling a personal consultation online
with library’s electronic resources librarian. A free “Investing Education Series”
event is scheduled on February 6 & 13. The Technology Tool Bar is scheduled to
go live in mid March.
B. County Librarian Report
County Librarian Nancy Howe distributed Silicon Valley Reads, Focus on
Food program guide and Library’s newly revised brochures available in
English, Spanish, and Chinese to the commissioners. She reported the
Library’s strategic goal is to have 85% of residents have an active library card.
During the last JPA meeting on January 24, the3-year Technology Plan of 5.6
million dollars was approved. The theme of the Library is to “lead with
technology”. If the Technology Tool bar pilot is successful in Cupertino, there
is a plan to add this program to all the county libraries. The JPA board has
five new members for 2013. The Employee Excellence Award will be
awarded to Wen-Ying Jaw, a Librarian at the Cupertino Library.
C. Poet Laureate Report
Nothing new to report other than what was discussed under 5 B.
D. Commissioner Reports
Commissioner Kolb shared concern that only one book return machine is
operational and open to public. Librarian Mark Fink explained that the
increased circulation and limited personnel to process the books return are an
issue.
Commissioner Stevenson talked about a library patron who lives in San Jose
and has a Cupertino business. He had trouble getting Cupertino library card
but his issue was eventually resolved. She also shared that Cupertino Library
Yelp page has negative reviews about WIFI at Library. Mark Fink stated that
library is aware of this issue and the district staff tracks and monitors the
Library Yelp account.
Commissioner Ho commented on some Cupertino schools where school
library are closed rely on Cupertino Library more than other schools.
Librarian Fink shared about increased partnerships between the library and
Cupertino Union School districts on various programs like library card drives
at all CUSD schools.
Commissioner Liu inquired about Library social media sites. He also wanted
to look at the Orange Boy survey data.
E. Staff Reports
Staff reported on collaboration between city and library for promoting library
events and programs. The City is taking nominations for CREST awards,
Distinguished and Emerging Artists awards.
F. Friends of Library
Friends Used book sale is scheduled on February 9 and 10.
G. Library Foundation - Eno Schmidt emailed status report to Commission
7. NEW BUSINESS
A. Welcome New Commissioners - was moved to 2 B.
B. Officers selection
Commissioner Grymes was nominated as commission chair and
Commissioner Stevenson seconded the motion. Commissioner Kolb was
nominated as vice chair. Commissioner Liu was nominated as secretary for
2013.
C. 2012 Summary of Commission’s Work
2012 Summary of Commission Work was approved after incorporating
Librarian Fink feedback. The document is ready to be distributed to City
Council.
D. 2013 Commission Work Plan
Commissioner Grymes and Kolb will work on the draft work plan and share it
with the rest of the commission for their feedback.
E. CPLA Workshop
There is upcoming CPLA event on Saturday March 16 at San Mateo Public
Library. Staff will take care of the commissioners’ CPLA membership.

Commissioner Liu will set up a new Google calendar
PA meeting is scheduled on February 28 at 1; 3 o pm.
