Special Meeting
January 9, 2013
1.CALL TO ORDER
At 7:03 p.m. Commissioner Kolb called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall,
10300 Torre Avenue, in EOC, Cupertino.

Commissioners: Susanna Tsai, Ann Stevenson, Adrian Kolb, Janet Riddell, Rose
Grymes
City/County Library Staff: Mark Fink, Carol Frost, Nidhi Mathur

3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Stevenson moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of
December 5, 2012. Commissioner Grymes seconded and the motion passed
unanimously.

5. OLD BUSINESS
Teen Advisory Board proposal
A.
Mark Fink reported on a meeting with Timm Borden, Director, Public Works
and Matt Lorenzo, Teen Librarian on courtyard project. During this meeting,
there was a consensus to create two raised beds in the courtyard with summer
and winter crops. The project also involves one composting bin and a storage
closet. The city is supportive of the project and needs to change the irrigation
in the courtyard. The project is a partnership between, Master Gardner, Teen
Advisory Board, Library and City of Cupertino. The Library wants to beautify
the whole courtyard and is currently looking for ideas. Library Commission
can get involved in this project by volunteering for this project and by
reporting their support of this project to City Council. The third support option
is by becoming the funding partner for this project. Teen Advisory Board will
also present this project to the Library Commission during the next meeting.
Poet Laureate selection committee
B.
Commissioner Kolb reported that Dave Denny is not reapplying for the
second term as Cupertino Poet Laureate. She is in process of putting together
the selection committee for the next Poet Laureate. This committee is chaired
by her, and also has Ann Stevenson, Roz Davis from Foundation, and Kathy
Stakey from Friends as members. They are looking for additional member
from Cupertino school districts and De Anza College. Bev Lenihan will be
consulting for marketing. The selection committee meetings will start at the
end of January and commissioner Kolb will keep the Library Commission
posted on any additional developments. The term for the new Poet Laureate
will start in October 2013.
Parking subcommittee

Commissioner Kolb reported that Orrin Mahoney’s response for the Parking
Committee was forwarded to all commissioners. This issue is part of the City
Center Master Plan and at this point Library commission need no further
discussion on this item and it can be taken off from old business.
6. REPORTS
Cupertino Community Librarian Report
A.
Cupertino Librarian Mark Fink reported that library is busy with 3% increase
in number of people coming to the library from November 2011, with about
223,000 in circulation. These numbers does not include online circulation.
Starting November, Cupertino Library offered 64 programs and 13 programs
outside library. The personal e-reader tutorial program is extended to end of
March. The appointment for this program can be booked online. The DIY
Green at Home toolkit program needs to re-energized and will be highlighted
on next issue of Cupertino Scene. New library card drive at local schools was
successful with 92 new cards got issued at Hyde Middle school 300 new cards
were issued at Cupertino Middle School. There is a teen and adult essay
contest for Silicon Valley Reads. The ESL Conversation Club is doing well
with 50 people in attendance every Friday. Mark shared an appreciation letter
for Chinese Book Discussion Group program by a library patron.

Carol Frost, Deputy County Librarian submitted the attached report.
Poet Laureate Report
C.
Winners of the poetry contest have been selected and will be announced on
January 24 at Cupertino Community Hall. During the event the judges will
present winners with the certificate and award checks and the event is free and
is open to public. There contest received more than 100 entries.
Commissioner Reports
D.
Commissioners Grymes reported on Tech Tool Bar. Commissioner Riddle
reported on next Book Sale. Commissioner Tsai reported on judging
Mandarin Speech contest from CALTAC. She said this meeting is her last
meeting as Library Commissioner, and she expressed her thanks to the
commission. Commissioner Kolb expressed appreciation for her work for last
8 years. Commissioner Riddle reported her thanks as January meeting was her
last commission meeting as well.

Next Friend’s Used Book Sale is scheduled for February 9 & 10 and Friend
are looking for volunteers for set-up help on Friday evening.

7. NEW BUSINESS
A. Officer Elections
The new officer nomination for chair and vice chair for 2013 will be done
during the February meeting when the newly nominated commissioners will
be in attendance.
