June programs highlight
"Growing Up Asian" contest display had its ribbon cutting ceremony at the Cupertino
Library on June 21S` at 2 pm. 3 young winners from this year's contest came with their
families. Gail Kong, President of the Asian Pacific Fund that sponsors this annual event
gave the awards to each of the winners. Mayor Dolly Sandoval, Councilmen Gilbert
Wong, Orin Mahoney, and Mark Santoro also came and talked to the audience.
After the ceremony, Ja-Lih gave Councilmen Wong and Santoro a tour of the Library.
They particularly liked the tour in our workroom watching the Automatic Material
Handling System at work.
Summer Reading kicked off on June 14`". This year, the County Library offers online
sign up for all ages. So adults, teens and children can sign up on our Web site, set their
own target (# of books to read) and monitors their own progress online. Teens are also
encouraged to write book reviews and put on our Web site.
As of today, we have 191 adults, 331 teens, and 2053 children signed up for our Summer
Reading program. I believe we are breaking our own records in both adult and teens sign
up and possibly for children also.
This year, we will have an author series at all libraries to promote adult reading. For
children, Cupertino will have one performance on every Thursday for 8 weeks, ending
with a performance with the San Jose Taiko at the Community Hall.
Building projects
The Book Drop project resumed last week. The City contracted Cobe Construction will
work with our AMHS vendor P V Supa to complete the installation of two exterior and
two interior book returns. During the construction, which is estimated to complete by the
end of August, the Library have to seal some of the book returns. But we will make
every effort to communicate with our patrons and make it easy for them to return items as
usual.
Parking
Summer time brings us a lot of patrons as early as our our opening hours. The parking
lot is very full by noon. We have patrons complaining about the extended use of the 4
minutes parking space by other patrons. The extra parking space across the street will be
very much appreciated by the public.
Respectfully submitted by Ja-Lih Lee, Cupertino Community Librarian
