Regular Meeting
October 3, 2012
1.CALL TO ORDER
At 7:00 p.m. Commissioner Grymes called the meeting to order at Cupertino City
Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue, in EOC, Cupertino.
2.ROLL CALL
Commissioners: Susanna Tsai, Rose Grymes, Ann Stevenson,
City/County Library Staff: Mark Fink, Derek Wolfgang Nidhi Mathur
Absent: Adrian Kolb, Janet Riddell
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Stevenson moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of
September 5, 2012. Commissioner Tsai seconded and the motion passed
unanimously.

5. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
None
6. OLD BUSINESS
A. Mayor’s Meeting
Commissioner Grymes attended the Oct 1 mayor’s meeting; she send her
meeting notes to the commissioners.
B. Library Report on e-Content
There is upcoming database presentation by the children librarians. The e-
Content statistics will be available next month when the person responsible
for it is back. Library is also working on the top 10 e-resources which can be
shared with key stakeholders.
C Online Feedback Tool – Survey Monkey
Environmental Speakers Series - using this idea as outreach and education to
prepare the community for a Climate Action Plan to update the General Plan.
There is nothing new to share on the online feedback tool.
7. NEW BUSINESS
A Commission Report to Council
Commissioner Grymes will attend the City Council meeting on Monday
November 5 to present the commissioners report to council.
8. REPORTS
A. Cupertino Community Librarian Report
The library attendance is up 10% and circulation is up 4% from the last year.
The Moving Days (Local Japanese American remembers World War II) event
scheduled on September 30 was successful and about 80 people attended that
day. The follow-up event on Civil Liberties and the Japanese American
Experience: Lessons Learned from Internment during World War II is
scheduled on November 18 at 1:30 pm. The moderator of that event will be
Tom Izu, Director of the California History Center at De Anza College.
Library has posted new videos on its YouTube channel.
B. County Librarian Report
Two books (The Long Walk by Brian Castner and Minefields of the Heart by Sue
Diaz) that describe the "invisible wounds of war" have been selected for Silicon
Valley Reads 2013. The kick-off event is scheduled on Wednesday, January 30, at
7:30 pm at the Heritage Theater in Campbell. Save the date for the annual Santa
Clara County Library Friends, Foundation, Endowment, and Commission Forum on,
February 9, 2013. The Zinio free downloadable magazines access began October 1
and is free to all Santa Clara County Library District cardholders. As part of
California Reads, Searching for Democracy project Children in grades K-8 are
invited to submit original drawings, paintings, collages, or photos in our art contest,
while teens are asked to enter digital photography.
C. Poet Laureate Report:
The city wide poetry contest will be held in November and the details will go
out in the Scene and other mediums.
D. Commissioner Reports
Commissioners Grymes reported on Environmental Speakers Series.
