OLD BUSINESS
2. Mary Avenue Bicycle Footbridge Update
Terry Green, City Architect, was unable to attend the meeting tonight as planned to report on his
visit to the manufacture's sites in Oregon. But, Staff Member Stillman passed around pictures taken
of the items being constructed in Oregon. Fabrications and cables are in route to Cupertino from
Germany and tower platforms fabrications are underway. The project is on schedule, and
construction will be visible from I-280 beginning in June.
3. Bicycle Transportation Plan Update
Commissioner Koski will revise Chapter I with comments received, and send Commissioner
Armstrong Chapter IV, the Bicycle Education and Safety, for his initial review. Commissioner
Paulsen received a PDF containing the Cupertino Bikeway routes from Staff Member Stillman, who
provided Commissioners copies of Chapter II, the Recommended Bikeway Network, for
prioritization of implementation items, such as the effect of the Mary Avenue Bicycle Footbridge on
the needs of surrounding bikeway and safer access to schools-maximize benefit with least cost.
The Transportation Plan is expected to be completed in a few month; after which, it will have public
review, city engineering review and approval, and city council approval.
4. Tri-School Commute Congestion Relief Measures
Michele Rivers of the Valley Transit Authority (VTA) sent Commissioner Walton a request to have
Cupertino schools participate in the VTA's "Walk to Elementary School" program next October.
The community has two prime candidates: Regnart and Lincoln Elementary Schools, but need a
coordinator to participate.
Leslie Fowler, a community guest, discussed her top priority that children in her neighborhood need
a safe route, which provides fun, non-isolated routes, to the tri-school area from her Steven Creek
School area that avoid the McClellan descent. Alternatives discussed were the longer Stevens Creek
Blvd. to Orange Ave route, or use of the future Stevens Creek Trail extension connecting to Byrne
Ave. Leslie was informed of others working toward her priority as well, such as David Greenstein
and Commissioner Koski.
NEW BUSINESS
5. Bike-To-Work Day 2008
Commissioner Walton reported that we recorded 152 bicycle commuters northbound and 119
southbound. The total of 271 bicyclers was an 18 percent increase from last year's Bike to Work
Day of 230 bicyclers. We had 97 bicyclers stop this year at our Energizer Station on Stelling Road in
front of Quinlan Center; 87 reported their planned roundtrip mileage for the day-an average of 29
roundtrip miles on a day that would set a record high temperature. Both Apple and HP had energizer
stations for their employees who biked to work.
