PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
At 7:32 p.m., Chairman Jessi Kaur called the meeting to order in Conference Room C, 10300 Torre
Avenue, Cupertino, California, and led the Pledge of Allegiance.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairman Jessi Kaur and Vice-Chair Rajeswari Mahalingam, and Commissioners KC
Chandratreya and Russell Leong. Absent: None. Staff present: Recording Secretary Kirsten Squarcia
STAFF REPORT
Recording Secretary Kirsten Squarcia read an email from Jason Durbin, VP of Project Management from
Azul Hospitality Group and the new Aloft Cupertino hotel regarding the coordination of the public art
portion of construction.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
BUSINESS
1. Minutes of the regular adjourned meeting of April 24, 2012.
Chandratreya moved and Leong seconded to approve the minutes as amended, to show corrections
to Commissioner Mahalingam’s name under Roll Call and Business; and corrections to
Commissioner Kaur’s name under Business. The motion carried unanimously.
2. Confirm representatives for the Mayor’s upcoming meetings with commissioners.

August 6, 4:30 p.m., Conference Room A – Rajeswari Mahalingam
October 1, 4:30 p.m., Conference Room A – Jessi Kaur
3. Review of Distinguished & Emerging Artists nomination packages
Recording Secretary Kirsten Squarcia distributed the Emerging Artist application from Emily
Wang as well as a Distinguished Artist nomination package from Carrie Zeidman. The
Commissioners reviewed the applications and voted to select Carrie Zeidman as the 2012
Distinguished Artist and Emily Wang as the Emerging Artist.
Criterion for the Distinguished Artist winner included relative merit based on her experience,
significant body of work, contribution to the community, longevity in her field, serious pursuit of
art, philosophy, voice, espousal of a cause, and recognition by others.

Criterion for the Emerging Artist winner included relative merit based on her education at Cal Poly
for art, diversity and experimentation of different art styles, moving into graphic design,
seriousness in craft, and participation in school shows.
COMMISSIONER REPORTS
4. Commissioner announcements about local arts events and opportunities
Chairman Chandratreya and Commissioner Leong both attended the De Anza Student Art Show
reception at the Euphrat Museum preceding the Fine Arts Commission meeting.
STAFF REPORTS
5. Status report from staff on commission vacancy (resignation of Commissioner Spielman)
The City of Cupertino is now accepting applications. The vacancy is open until filled.
