Regular Meeting
August 1, 2012
1.CALL TO ORDER
At 7:01 p.m. Commissioner Kolb called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall,
10300 Torre Avenue, in EOC, Cupertino.
2.ROLL CALL
Commissioners: Adrian Kolb, Susanna Tsai, Rose Grymes, Ann Stevenson, Janet
Riddell
City/County Library Staff: Mark Fink, Nancy Howe, Nidhi Mathur
Absent: None
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Grymes moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of June
6, 2012. Commissioner Kolb seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
4. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS -
None
PRESENTATION
Dave Denny presented Poet Laureate quarterly report to the Library commission. He
stated April was the National Poetry Month and he participated in various events
including Library Foundation promotional video, poetry readings at Barnes and
Noble, and San Jose Museum event. There was also a poetry reading by local poets
on Earth in which he participated. There are three poetry workshops scheduled this
summer. One of them is scheduled on August 15 at Library Story Room. He visited
Laura Oliver’s College for Kids class at De Anza College. He reported he is meeting
with local Poet Laureates on monthly basis, and encouraged anybody interested in
poetry to like Poet Laureate Facebook page. He is planning to schedule a citywide
poetry contest in fall and would like to use existing funds to advertise and for cash
prizes for this event. He informed the commission of his participation in upcoming
event at Saratoga. He invited for fresh ideas and suggestions for future Poet Laureate
program.

6. OLD BUSINESS
A.
Mayor’s Meeting
Commissioner Tsai will attend Monday, August 6 Mayor’s Meeting.
7. NEW BUSINESS
A.Library Report on e-Content
Commissioner Grymes asked for the training to, analyze and evaluate the
available Library reports on e-content. Librarian Mark Fink reported as the e-
content report is very comprehensive and he would like to put together a
presentation that will highlight commissioner’s areas of interest. He suggested
45 minutes presentation highlighting top 8-10 resources can be scheduled on a
special meeting. County Librarian Nancy Howe suggested the commissioners
can help Library by providing their feedback on effective use of electronic
resources as well as spreading the word about these additional library services.
B. Online Feedback Tool – Survey Monkey
Commissioner Grymes suggested to Survey Monkey tool for Environmental
Speaker Series. County Librarian Nancy Howe stated the county is adding a
survey tool on the library’s new website. Library Commission supported the
use of this tool.
8. REPORTS
A. Cupertino Community Librarian Report
Cupertino Librarian Mark Fink reviewed the monthly report. Cupertino
Library will be showcasing a Moving Days Japanese American Art exhibit.
For this library is working in partnership with Santa Clara Valley History
Collaborative, Cupertino Historical Society, Japanese American Museum of
San Jose and California History Center at De Anza College. This exhibit will
run from August till the end of October. There will also be two speaker series
panel discussion related to this event in upcoming months.
There is about 10% increase in library circulation since July last year and
around 3-4% increase in number of visitors during the same time frame.
Few Library commissioners tested out couple of toolkits with commissioners
and library is collecting library story, and wanted commissioner to share their
story about the use of toolkit.
Library also received good amount of media coverage in Mercury News and
Historical Society newsletter.
B. County Librarian Report
Nancy Howe reported all Santa Clara County Libraries now have a fabric flap
on book/media drop boxes. This fabric is designed by library staff to keep the
drop box screen cool. The county library has a new logo and website that will
get launched on August 15. Santa Clara County library will be eligible for $15
M state funding for literacy program. She reported county librarian selection
process is ongoing and the formal interview probably will occur in late
September. She also talked about a smartphone app for all Santa Clara County
Library.
C. Commissioner Reports
Commissioner Kolb stated she vats to close the loop with Friends on book theft
issue. Staff reported Kathy Staley will get contacted directly by Timm Borden,
Public Worts Director on this issue.
Commissioner Gryr es reported on Environmental Speaker Series meeting and said
the group continues to meet.
Commissioner Tsai requested Lark to provide her with library activity information
for upcoming Mayor's meeting.
Commissioner Steverson reported that commissioner Tsai, Mark Fink and she
attended last City Council meeting and spore to council to express Library
Commission appreciation for council support. Mark Fink commented two council
members are interested in additional hours at Cupertino Library, and there is a related
proposal for consideration for next fiscal year.
D. Staff Reports
Staff reported that David Brandt will be joining Cupertino in September as the new
City Manager. He is the City Manager of Redmond, Oregon since 2049 and in a Bay
area nature.
Staff also shared Library Commission group picture for hanging at the Library.
F. Friends of Cupertino Library — Janet Riddell reported on meeting of Timm with
Kathy Staley. The next book sale is scheduled in October.
O. Library Foundation — Ergo Schmidt em.ailed status report to Commission.
