Regular Meeting
June 6, 2012
1.CALL TO ORDER
At 7:04 p.m. Commissioner Kolb called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall,
10300 Torre Avenue, in EOC, Cupertino.
2.ROLL CALL
Commissioners: Adrian Kolb, Susanna Tsai, Rose Grymes, Ann Stevenson, Janet
Riddell
City/County Library Staff: Mark Fink, Nancy Howe, Nidhi Mathur
Absent: None
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Riddell moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of May
7, 2012. Commissioner Stevenson seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
4. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS -
None
PRESENTATION
Emmet Nelson showcased Cupertino Do-It-Yourself Green@Home ToolKit. This kit can be
checked out at the Library beginning summer for a week with the ability to renew for
.
additional week. It contains an instruction booklet detailing how to use everything in the kit
The booklet provides instructions with pictures, illustrations and QR Codes. The kit contains
energy literacy information, description of tools to be returned to the library like Infrared
laser thermometer which allows you to spot check the air temperature throughout your home
as well as equipment like low flow shower head, refrigerator thermometer, outlet gasket for
the resident to keep and install in their home. The devices in the kit are free and can
potentially save up $100 - $280 on the annual utility bill.
The residents have to sign the waiver document before they can check out this kit.
Commissioners Kolb, Grymes and Stevenson, signed up to test drive the toolkit.
5. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS –

6. OLD BUSINESS
A. Discussion of Library Commission at the City Council Budget Hearing
The budget hearing is scheduled for June 18, Commissioner Stevenson and Tsai will
present a commission report to City Council and thanks for their support..
Poet Laureate Dave Denny also plans to be there to provide the brief report
and convey his thanks to the city council.
B. Mayor’s Meeting
Commissioner Ann will go to the June 18 Mayor’s Meeting
C. Community Awareness
The commissioner received their name tags from city staff, and decided on
which group picture needs to get printed for displaying at the library.
7. REPORTS
A. Cupertino Community Librarian Report
Cupertino Librarian Mark Fink reviewed the monthly report. PlaneTree is
having their grand opening on Friday June 8 at 7 pm at the Library. Library is
planning to launch the toolkit in July. Library along with other community
partners is organizing six small business seminars during summer. Summer
Reading program signup has started and children, teens as well as adults can
sign-up online.
B. County Librarian Report
Nancy Howe reported Santa Clara County Library District is currently
participating in California Reads, and invited everybody to participate in
reading and discussion programs related to the topic “Searching for
Democracy”. She said the author of both the featured books will speak in
Milpitas and Gilroy library. The library is renewing library cards for non-
residents who purchased the card in July 2011. Check out Science kit has a
long waiting list. Discover & Go is a new service that allows library
cardholders to reserve free or discounted passes to a number of Bay Area
attractions like Tech museum. Cardholders can now checkout Blue Ray
DVDs.
C. Cupertino Poet Laureate – No new news to report
D. Commissioner Reports
Commissioner Kolb said the maximum time allotted for individual to speak
during oral communication as well as on any agenda item is 3 minutes. She
made a motion to cancel July 4 Library Commission meeting because of lack
of business.
Commissioner Tsai reported sister city Hsinchu presented a picture to
Cupertino Library during the last council meeting.
Commissioner Grymes reported on Environmental Speaker Series, stating the
structure of the program is becoming larger than previously anttcipated. The
partners (City, Library, De Anza College) of this program are trying to keep
the focus of the program at the local level. The tentative plan is to get the first
event scheduled for fall or early next year.
E. Staff Reports
Contact Pat Cormery of De Anna College to find out the potential of having a
commission meeting along with the open house at Kirch Center during
September or October.
F. Friends of Cupertino Library — Janet Riddell reported that Friends provided are
additional funding to Library for Bestseller D D collection, technology
collection, software installation and library aquarium fish digital software,
G. Library Foundation — Eno Schmidt emailed status report to Commission
