Regular Meeting

1. CALL TO ORDER
At 7:03 p.m. Commissioner Miller called the meeting to order at Cupertino City Hall,
10300 Torre Avenue, Conference Room 100, Cupertino.
2. ROLL CALL
Commissioners: Ram Gopal, Ron Miller, Janet Riddell, Kathy Stakey, Susanna Tsai
City/County Library Staff: Carol Atwood, Terry Greene, Ja-Lih Lee
Absent: Melinda Cervantes
3. MINUTES
Commissioner Stakey moved to approve the minutes of March 5, 2008 as amended.
Commissioner Gopal seconded and motion passed unanimously.
4. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
None
5. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
Carol Atwood briefly summarized SB 343 as it pertains to material received at the
Commission meetings and at each Commissioner's home or business.
6. CITY OF CUPERTINO LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
Ja-Lih Lee reviewed the attached monthly report.
7. COUNTY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
Deferred to next meeting.
8. STAFF REPORTS
Carol Atwood reviewed her finding for parking overflow. She noted that the City has the
right of use of the surface area of Lot A in the Hunter Storm property for special events.
Carol also noted that she would pursue use of this easement for all nights and weekends
and report back to the Commission.
9. OTHER REPORTS
A. Commissioners
Commissioner Gopal distributed pictures of Cupertino's first library and library
committee.
Commissioner Miller reviewed the mayor's meeting of March 31 and highlighted
the library interest items.

10. OLD BUSINESS
A. Library Fundraiser
Carol Atwood gave a summary of the library fundraiser. She requested that the
Commission spread the word about the Chicago tickets which must be sold by
April 30. She also noted that the on-line auction would be held from May 1
through June 2. The Commission requested posters and bookmarks to help
market the events.
B. Consider Reinstatement of Quarterly General Update to City Council
Commissioner Miller will present a report to City Council on April 15 and the
Commissioners will rotate every quarter.
C. Friends of the Library
Commissioner Stakey reported that she is the current president and provided a
brief presentation and mentioned the upcoming book sale on May 24-25.
D. Library Foundation
Ja-Lih Lee noted that the Foundation just held their annual meeting with election
of officers. She noted that she would be developing annual goals.
E. Status of Outstanding CIP Projects
Terry Greene gave a PowerPoint presentation of where the staffing and projects
are in the Public Works Department. He noted that the book drop project started
in November of 2006, but met with difficulty due to the building's structural
system conflicts, vendor misunderstandings, and ADA/Title 24 access
requirements. Estimated completion is September 1. Terry indicated that the seat
wall and handrail project would start around June 1 and cost approximately
$30,000. He also noted that the window wall repair is now complete.

The Commission reviewed the calendar as presented by Commissioner Gopal.

As was mentioned earlier, on March 5~', we celebrated Dr. Seuss Birthday. 70-75
children came with their pazents or caregivers. The Children's Librarians did a Reader's
Theater with "Cat in the Hat" and "Green Eggs and Ham." We were happy to see this
program reported on the next issue of "Cupertino Courier."
70 students participated in the SAT prepazation test held on March 8 and 71 came on
March 16 to learn the strategies of taking SAT test.
Children's Librarians made 4 visits to classrooms from preschools to elementary schools
in Cupertino. 8 classes visited the Cupertino Library. Most of these students are from
Eaton School located near the Library.
The Adult Librarian team that leads the monthly Book Talk and Book Discussion also
brought their program to the Chateau Senior Apartment. 15 people attended their book
discussion in the library and 10 attended the book discussion at Chateau Apartment.
New Computers
We aze excitedly waiting for the new PCs to be deployed to Cupertino Library. They will
replace our staff as well as public computers on site. We aze very hopeful that the PCs
will allow us to provide more reliable access to our catalog, databases and the Internet for
our patrons.
Program Calendar online
The County Library purchased a program to display program schedules on our Web site.
Patrons can view programs per library, or programs by type. A sample page is attached.
