Regular Meeting
June 24, 2003
CALL TO ORDER
At 7:40~o.m., Chairperson Shirley Lin-Kinoshita called the meeting to order in the City Manager's
Office, 10300 Torre Avenue.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairperson Shirley Lin-Kinoshita, Commissioners Nancy Canter (7:45 p.m.), David Kim,
Janet Mohr, Carl Orr, and Rita Young (7:45 p.m.). Commissioners absent: Hema Kundargi. Staff
present: City Clerk Kimberly Smith
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
1. Minutes of the regular meeting of May 27, 2003.
Carl Orr and David Kim moved and seconded to approve the minutes as presented. The
motion carried unanimously, with Hema Kundargi absent.
PRESENTATIONS
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
Nancy Canter distributed a flyer listing the exhibit schedule for the Euphrat Museum of Art for the
calendar year.
COMMISSIONER AND LIAISON REPORTS
Monthly meeting with Mayor Chang (3rd Tuesday at 5 p.m.)
· Written report from Janet Mohr on the June meeting
· July and August meetings have been cancelled.
NEW BUSINESS
Report from the ad hoc committee members for the Distinguished Artist of the Year award
(Kundargi, Orr, Young)
· Select recipient
· Select award date and location
· Consider feasibility of arranging for a performance/exhibition
Janet Mohr moved and Nancy Canter seconded to accept the committee's recommendation
to select Constance Guidotti as the Distinguished Artist for 2003. The City Clerk will send
written notification, and Chairperson Lin-Kinoshita will contact her by phone to confirm if
she is available to accept the award at the Shakespeare performance on August 9 and if her
work can be seen in the community. The City Clerk will also determine if the lobby would

be available on the evening of August 18 (or longer) in case she would like to display some
of her artwork.
Request for a Fine Arts Commissioner to serve as one of the judges for a teen photography
contest at the Cupertino Library, "Teens View the Many Faces of Cupertino." Judging will
take place in September in two categories, age 13-16, and 17-19. Contact Gayathri Kanth
446-1677 ext 3312.
Janet Mohr volunteered to serve as a judge, and will contact Ms. Kanth directly. Nancy
Canter will be the alternate judge if necessary.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
5. Status report on the Art and Wine Festival information booth. The event is July 19-20.
The City Clerk and Commissioner Janet Mohr will collaborate on materials to be distributed
at the information booth. The other commissioners agreed to the following schedule:
Saturday morning, set-up by Carl Orr and booth staffed by Shirley Lin-Kinoshita. Saturday
afternoon, booth staffed by Hema Kundargi (Carl Orr will confirm this time with her) and
Nancy Canter is available as backup. Sunday morning, booth staffed by David Kim and
Rita Young in the morning, and Nancy Canter and Carl Orr in the afternoon.
Finalize the General Guidelines for Selecting Public Art
· Report from ad hoc committee (Mohr, Lin-Kinoshita, and Canter)
· Review sample materials (Canter)
The subcommittee members said that they had not had an opportunity to update the
materials, and asked that it be pulled from the agenda until further notice.
STAFF REPORTS
Status report on "Perspectives" sculpture by Roger Berry
· Bid opening for park July 9, award of bid July 21
The Commission suggested that when the park is opened and/or sculpture is unveiled, VIP
invitations should include past Distinguished Artists and Fine Arts Commission members.
