P&R 05-01-03 APPROVED PARKS AND I CREAT ON COMMISSION CITY OF CUPERTINO REGULAR MEET1NG THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2003 CALL TO ORDER Vice-chairperson Brown called the regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission to order at 7:05 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL Commissioners present: Commissioners absent: Staff present: Rod Brown, Frank Jelinch, Roger Peng, Kris Wang Jeanne Bradford Therese Ambrosi Smith, Director; Marie Preston, Administrative Secretary MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING Minutes of the regular March 6, 2003, meeting were unanimously approved as written. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS A. Tony and Grace Toy, 10130 Crescent Road, approached the Commission again regarding policy irregularities at the Sports Center. They distributed copies of a November 15, 2002, correspondence to the Commission and Therese Smith. The Toys stated that they felt frustrated and unheard at the meetings with Sports Center staff and that they wanted this issue to be placed on the Commission's next agenda. Therese requested that the Toys develop an agenda for a meeting with Sports Center staffto address their concerns. She stated that the Commission would take up the matter of Sports Center policies in the fall, and all pass holders would be notified and invited to participate in the process. WRITTEN A. Therese reviewed the April 28, 2003, letter from Ciddy Wordell, City Planner, requesting applicants for the Cupertino General Plan Task Force. Applications must be received by Friday, June 6. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. 4th of July - refined plan: Therese shared the updated details of the 4th of July fireworks event that will be held at Cupertino High School. She outlined the Sheriff's Operational Plan. She also reported that over 1,500 letters went out to neighbors of Cupertino High School inviting them to a neighborhood meeting; 15 residents attended. She reported that there had been concerns over the visibility of the fireworks. The Sheriff's Department arranged for a helicopter flyover of the high school at various heights. Staffat various points in the city, reported if they could see the helicopter at 200, 300, and 400 feet (same heights as detonated fireworks). Eight sites were recognized as having fair to excellent views. HP has given permission to use their lot for spectators; they will not allow vehicles on their property. Sheriff's will be available to patrol the property. 5. NEW BUSINESS - None MISCELLANEOUS - NO ACTION REQUIRED A. Staff Oral Reports: 1) Sports Center remodeling will probably start after the 4th of July. Pass holders have received a letter with information. A trailer for administration purposes will be on site during construction. 2) Cupertino Day is planned for May 3 weather permitting. B.
