PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION HELD APRIL 10, 2003
CONFERENCE ROOM A, CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA

The Chair, Emma Darknell, called the meeting to order.

IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
March minutes approved.
V. REPORT FROM COUNTY FIRE:
Chief Lopes distributed and discussed the monthly statistics for the month of February 2003.
Chief Lopes told the Commission that Cupertino did not have any fire deaths for the month.
Chief Lopes advised the comrmssion that there were more vehicle fires than structure fires in Cupertino.
Chief Lopes advised that the fire district's business plan is moving forward.
Chief Lopes told the Commission that the recruit class originally had 15 firefighters, but was scaled back to
10 firefighters.
Commissioner Chang asked Chief Lopes for more information regarding an arson fire that occurred in
Cupertino.
Chief Lopes advised the Commission that he would like to continue to attend the Public Safety
Commission meetings every month. Chief Lopes stated that if he is busy, and unable to attend, he would
have another person attend the meetings in his place.
The Public Safety Commission voted, and motion passed unanimously, to keep County Fire in attendance.

VIII. COMMISSIONERS REPORT:
Commissioner Darknell told the Commission that she would be meeting with City Manager, Dave Knapp
on Thursday, April 17, 2003 to discuss the role of the Commission.
comrmssioner Riddell told the conumssion that according to the Municipal Code; the Public Safety
Commission is to meet on a monthly basis.
commtssioner Riddell read the Traffic Safety comnUttee Minutes to the Commission.
Commissioner Chen stated he spoke with Mayor, Michael Chang, and he said Mayor Chang supports the
reports from police and fire.
Commissioners would like to place an item of discussion on City Council's agenda.
Commissioner Riddell told the Commission that he would like to meet before they go to City Council.
Commissioner Chen told the comrmssion that he would be meeting with Emergency Preparedness
Coordinator, Marsha Hovey.
