MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
BICYCLE PEDESTRIAN COMMISSION
March 21, 2007
The meeting was called to order at 7:08 p.m.

ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Fari Aberg from the Public Safety Commission provided information on the upcoming Public Safety
Fair, which will take place on Saturday, August 25. Commissioner Aberg inquired if any of the
commissioners would be interested in participating in the fair. The commissioners decided to agendize
this item to a later date in order to discuss their involvement.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
Chairperson May Koski reviewed an oral communication from a resident expressing interest in a safe
bike or walking path from the Stevens Creek Elementary School area to Kennedy and Monta Vista.
Chairperson Koski invited the resident to participate in a group that focuses on traffic ideas and
concerns in the Monta Vista, Kennedy, Lincoln, Stevens Creek and Regnart School areas.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
1. January 17
The commission approved the January 17 minutes as submitted. VOTE: 4-0.
OLD BUSINESS
2. Bicycle Transportation Plan Update
Commissioner Joe Walton informed the commissioners that the Bicycle Transportation Plan update was
underway. Commissioner Walton also indicated that he's had difficulty obtaining an electronic copy of
the plan for revising purposes. Senior Civil Engineer David Stillman informed the commissioners that
there was the capability to scan the document into a word document, however re-formatting and

modifications would be necessary. Commissioner Walton also inquired about the possibility of evenly
distributing the task of updating the plan among the commissioners. The commissioners decided to
generate a list of the chapters that they would be interested in updating and then forward that
information to Staff Liaison Stillman to finalize the chapter assignments.
NEW BUSINESS
3. Election of Commission Chair and Vice Chair *Possible Action *
The commissioners elected James Wiant and Geoffrey Paulsen as Chair and Vice Chair respectively.
VOTE: 4-0
4. Mary Avenue Bicycle Footbridge Update
Senior Civil Engineer David Stillman updated the commissioners. on the status of the MAB Project.
David Stillman indicated that construction was scheduled to start around June 2007 and the bridge to be
opened to pedestrian and bicycle traffic around April of 2008. The commissioners inquired if there
would be a ceremony for the opening. David Stillman stated that there would be a ceremony and that he
would inform the commissioners of the details at a future meeting. The commissioners also discussed
the possibility of providing naming alternatives for the Mary Avenue Bicycle Footbridge. Senior Civil
Engineer David Stillman informed the commissioners that he would share with them the guidelines for
naming facilities and also advised them to allow the City Council to take the lead in this effort.
5. BPC Participation in Bike to Work Day
The commissioners reviewed the upcoming Cupertino Scene article regarding Bike to Work Day.
Commissioner Joe Walton talked about the commissions' involvement and the duties for the event. He
also talked about the businesses that offered to support the event by providing refreshments. The
commissioners decided to post signs advertising the event and also talked about other necessities for the
day.
6. BPC Meeting Schedule *Possible Action *
The commissioners discussed the possibility of modifying their bi-monthly meeting schedule in an effort
to minimize the use of staffs' time. After further discussion, the commissioners decided to maintain the
current meeting schedule but looked at ways to minimize staffs' time. The commissioners also agreed
to assist with minutes preparation during the 4-month period that the current minutes preparer would be
out on leave.
7. 2007 BPC Goals
Continue to support the construction of the Mary Avenue Bicycle Footbridge Project
Update the Bicycle Pedestrian Plan
Research new bikeways and walkways in town
Continue to support safe routes to school and examine alternatives
Move forward with the Bicycle Friendly Community application and educate others of the process
Minimize staff involvement for commission meetings
Update the BPC portion of the website with additional information
