I. CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Chuck Corr.

IV. APPROVAL OF MINU'FES:
April minutes approved as submitted.
V. REPORT FROM THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE:
Lt. Slack distributed statistics for the month of March and commented that there were no significant crime
patterns last month.
Lt. Slack reported that the Tandem race through Cupertino went very well with no significant problems
reported.
There was a recent arrest of two juveniles from Saratoga for charges of auto burglmy. The two
individuals are believed to be responsible for between approximately twenty and twenty-five auto
burglaries in Cupertino, and possibly approximately ten auto burglaries in Sunnyvale.
School Resource Deputy Janet Shannon will be attending a cultural awareness training course to further
enhance her problem solving skills with multi-cultural issues in the schools. There recently has been a
rise in conflicts between the Asian and Caucasian students in the local high schools.
VI. REPORT FROM CENTRAL FIRE
The Chief distributed fire statistics for the months of Febmmy and March. He also distributed a written
summa~ of a recent fire at a large residential home on Rainbow Ct.
The Chief brought a map of the entire West Valley area and explained briefly how Central Fire District is
geographically located. He discussed the location of varions stations and how the stations are positionally
situated related to response times. The Chief also commented on the recent request from the City of Los
Altos and the Town of Los Altos Hills for Central Fire to provide fire services to their respective cities.

Vii. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
The Chair attended the Mayors breakfast and commented on the issued discussed as being the dust
problem on Stevens Creek Blvd. from Kaiser Cement and the possible expansion of the Cupertino Library.
The Chair suggested to the commission looking into possibly obtaining business cards for the commission
members. The Chair will continue to pursue this matter and report back to the commission in future
meetings.
VIII. WRI'I-I~N COMMUNICATIONS:
None.
IX. OLD BUSINESS:
The commission continued to discuss the sales of earthquake kits at the Cupertino An & Wine Festival
that is scheduled for August 10th and 1 lth. The Chair brought some pamphlets from the Citizens Police
Academy as a sample of information that the commission may want to consider to distribute at a Public
Safety Commission booth at the festival.
Marie Moore from Disaster Preparedness attended the meeting to give suggestions to the commission
regarding her knowledge of selling esxthquake kits.
X. NEW BUSINESS:
Staffbfiefly discussed the inquiry from the Chair regarding the approach-turn accident rate at the
intersection fiN. Pomal Ave. and Stevens Creek Blvd. by use of a graph and accident rote statistics.
The Chair distributed the preliminary draft of the Cupertino Five Year Capital Improvements Program
that he received from the Public Works Department.
