The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Chuck Corr.

IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
December minutes were approved as submitted.
V. REPORT FROM THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE:
Sgt. Salcido advised the commission that Deputy Dean Baker was chosen to be the Cupertino Deputy of
the Year and will be recognized at the Mayor's State of the City Address held at the Quinlan Center.
The nnmlal Avoid the 13 crackdown on drinking drivers was recently concluded with 54 DUI arrests
m:~d¢ in Cupertino. Cupertino Deputy Mark Garcia was recogni?ed for making 17 of the total 54 DUI
arrests.
There have been a rash of residential burglaries along the Cuperdno/San Jose border. The burglaries are
generally being committed durimg the daytime where the majority of property being taken is jewelry. The
Sheriff's Department, Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, and San Jose Police are all investigating
similar type burglaries, to ascertain if the same perpetrators are responsible for burglaries in the three
different cities.
Sgt. Salcido reported that Captain Wilson is recovering well after his recent surgery.

No further meetings have been held regarding Cupertino city focus groups.
No fu~her information has been reeeivcd regarding bicycle safety on Stevens Canyon Rd.
X. NEW BUSINESS:
Commissioner Charles Pickett was elected as Chair for 1997. Commissioner JohnDrexler was elected as
Vice-Chair for 1997.
The commission chose hhe following 1997 agenda items to be discussed at upcoming meetings:
- Report from Public Workz
- Surface street traffic and the impa~t from Hwy. 85
- Neighborhood Watch programz
- Multi-Language hnntlbook~
- Pedestrian Safety
- Marie Moore; Disaster Preparedness update
- Public Safety Commission meeting agenda in Cupertino Scene
- Kaiser Cement tire burning
Alex Wykoff distributed invitations to the 1997 Commissioners Dinner to all commissioners. The dinner
is scheduled to be held on F~iday, February 7, 1997 at 6 p.m.
